Over 20 years to find someone half-decent, by my reckoning.

Gerald Kaufman deserves a mention for being Jewish, and the grandson of an Auschwitz survivor, but being outspokenly, resolutely anti-Zionist. So much so that he got death threats on a regular basis, I believe.

I attended a lecture that he gave at Manchester University when I was 16 and he made quite an impression on me.

you can take what I know about the Labor Party and fit it on a fortune cookie.
still, I have a hunch that if we did things the way we do today that each and every one of those Leaders of the past would have Yomp's bile backing up just as much as it does for you know who.
I am not a robot.

Gordon Brown will one day be up there with them for rallying the Western world when the banking system collapsed and presiding over the longest period of sustained economic growth in modern British history.

What you don't seem to remember is that it is only hindsight that makes those figures look impressive, you'd have derided Tony Benn as much as you do Jeremy Corbyn, as would Coan, and don't try to pretend any different, same with Barabara Castle and Nye Bevan.

The main ones missing from Coan's list are Attlee, the most important British post war politician of all, and Harold Wilson. They changed post war Britain for ever and politically defined the 60s between them.

The Tories are still to shit scared to deal with Attlee's legacy head on because it defines modern Britain for most people.

Attlee was a weed. His post-War Cabinet was impressive.

Which is exactly the level of intelligence I would expect from you.

Have you ever wondered why his Post-War cabinet found him impressive enough to follow?

And not a tough guy like yourself, John? I must say, I'm struggling to understand your point here.

The Attlee government was so impressive that they lost the next election to a 76 year old Churchill.

I'm not deriding the significant achievements of the Labour government of 45, although it is worth remembering that it was around 15 years of national government that played a part in those things coming into play.

No they didn't. They got a significantly reduced majority but a higher popular vote than in 1945.

Presiding over a disintegrating Empire while trying to rebuild the country was an near-impossible task. It was also politically contradictory (colonialism vs socialism?)

Not to mention having to maintain rationing because the Americans were glad to see the UK rot and weren't comfortable with ''commies" in charge
