A true cultural iconclast and with the possible exception of Barry Malzburg, the last of the great SF short story writers. Also a hugely influential figure in TV and movies - his stories were cited as inspiration for Bowie's Diamond Dogs and James Cameron's Terminator movies. His script for the Star Trek episode City on the Edge of Forever - albeit heavily bowdlerized from his original - remains a fixture on Best Ever ST episodes.
If you've never read any HE, do yourself a favour and check out a collection such as Deathbird Stories or Ellison Wonderland
