What do you keep around thinking you'll use again someday?

Postby sloopjohnc » 18 Jun 2018, 22:51

I use to have to wear sports coats and slacks every day at work and then I didn't.

I gained like 15 lbs and couldn't wear the slacks anymore, I kept them, thinking I'd lose the weight again.

After about five years, I figured it wasn't happening so I gave them all away.

Now I'm pretty good at not keeping stuff.

My boss keeps things in our marcom storage closet that he'll never ever use - old banners for tradeshows and tradeshow carpeting. And stuff you can't even use anymore because other technology has replaced it.

Once, when he was gone for a couple days, my co-worker told him that I threw it all out and his eyes got round like saucers.

Me too. I’ve used mine less than 20 times in the last 10 years but I can’t imagine getting rid of it.

not sure it's exactly about potentially "using" them again, but my stamp collection still takes up alot of space in our loft. It's partly what I collected when i was 10-13, partly what I inherited from my grandfather. I used to be obsessed by it, and much of my geography/history is self-learnt through collecting stamps. These days, I can't even begin to relate to the obsession I had with them, except I notice that the way i crave to organise and reorganise things in my life is very similar to how i could spend hours on end thinking about how best to organise my precious stamps. I partly keep them as a tribute to that period of time, and partly because there is still a part of me that is a hoarder at heart. But i seriously doubt I'll ever collect again.

A snorkel.

A small tub of Vaseline I bought in Amsterdam, about 15 years ago.

A point-and-shoot camera. Redundant now that phone cameras are so good.

A lingering shred of self-respect.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

And there it goes.

Anyone need any self-loathing, I've got plenty to spare.

I am moving house soon, so I am in the process of clearing this house, which I have lived in with my wife and two children for 30 years. I have train sets, a mountain of WWE merchandise, loads of speakers decks and amps. About 10,000 comics, 31 guitars. A Batman collection of ridiculous proportions. Boxes of computer games on cassette. Several crates of leads and transformers and adapters. Many musical instruments, drums keyboards and pipes.

And that is before I even begin on the sheds. I have already half filled a large storage unit and I haven't even ventured into the attic yet. None of his stuff is of any use to me any more. I have no idea what to do with it, or how to sell it without giving up every waking hour enslaved to Gumtree and ebay.

It worries me.
You don't like me...do you?

Just about any container that could be potentially used to put stuff in, including boxes of all sizes.

The women I've gone out with don't have to worry about that kind of thing anymore.
