Korea

Postby Toby » 27 Apr 2018, 14:24

I get the feeling that Kim Jong Un's economy is obviously on the ropes and maybe even his regime, otherwise I doubt that this reach-out would have happened. But it does feel significant.

How much of this is due to Trump? And IF N Korea disarms its nuclear stockpile, the DMZ is removed and a peace accord signed, it would be an absolutely huge boost for him, particularly as we are in an era where detente seems to be very much on the wane.

I was wondering that myself, did Trump actually do good, and will he get unbiased praised if this works? We have to wait to see if this works first though. Kim Jong-un could fuck this up at any time. I'd say we have to give it a few months before we can say this works.

I don't see reunification, nor do I see a liberal democracy in its future but with its new nukes and missiles, not to mention its case against the west, how brutally they were bombed in the Korean War, NK now at last has an ace or two in its hand to break the sanctions and maybe grow like a new China.

In North Korea it's considered good luck to have a building collapse on you.

Playing devil's advocate - what if he was involved? I think he's probably looked at the overall picture and thought "what's going to get me elected for a second term?? A major peace initiative of some kind.

Or perhaps, faced with a genuine madman, he blinked first.

(Works for them both)

Yeah I imagine it's sanctions lifted for nukes. China has probably played a significant role too.

I wouldn't rule out some kind of influence but it's such a volte-face I would assume there are other, more important factors involved

Are you saying they'd scrap nukes for lifting of sanctions? I don't think so. They'll keep their nukes and then agree to behave capitalistically and so get along like other nuclear nations like Pakistan. They'd be just another nuclear country and also would no longer fear an invasion.

If NK de-nukes because they think Trump is willing to blow them up .... hey, I'm willing to take it.

As much as I hated Reagan, I had to admit, that the end of the Soviet Union might not have taken place if we had a friendly peacenik Dem in the White House during the 80s. That's one of the great humanitarian acts to happen in my lifetime.
