Born one hundred years ago today.

An awful lot of rubbish and some joyous moments of total genius.

I turned and rubbed my hands with glee. I always keep a tin of glee handy.

I think you have the quantities the wrong way round, but maybe because that's because I remember the radio ahead of his time on TV. Not knocking Q at all - a really great programme – but The Goon Show (along with Mad magazine and Molesworth) pretty much set my sense of humour (and that of the Pythons, who were teenagers then). Writing (most of) 250 half-hour shows of extraordinarily inventive comedy, and performing in them too, that's a hell of an achievement, and I can't think of anyone who came close to matching it.
A great man, the greatest ever Indian-born Anglo-Irish jazz trumpeter and comedian who ever went to school in Lewisham

Yeah, one of the foundations of U.K. comedy.

I’ve only dipped my toe (ears) into the Goons, it fizzes madly with ideas, stupid voices, freedom but it’s a bit wearing at this distance - something he had to get out of his head for himself.

His wartime memoirs were what I came to first (cold collation!), though I’ve not read them since the mid 80s. Dig Q a lot too, I remember the trailer for the early 80s run that started out as a posthumous tribute to him, the sepia picture of Spike suddenly springing to life and reacting in puzzlement to the announcement.

If you’ve come across his work recently there’s plenty of stuff to object to from a 2018 perspective but different times and all that.

I wonder if anyone was ever given as much artistic freedom as Spike was by the BBC to make the Q series?

It's like someone tipped him upside down and emptied the entire contents of his head onto the airwaves!

I was watching Mel Brooks' History of the World, Pt. 1, and Spike Milligan has a bit part in it. I'd never noticed him in it before.

I like some of his stuff but the Goon Show is particularly shite.

Can't see anything.

They've got that Philomena Cunk rubbish sewn up, anyway.

Their place has been as devastated and demoralised by the political point scoring as ours.

Really? That's a shame.

It's populated by some silly individuals but some fantastic minds.

Did you watch the BBC Four specials a couple of nights ago?

It was intermittently amusing. But we never had a more self-indulgent comic. How much 'corpsing' can you stand? He was a much better writer than performer.
