And an utterly shit idea for a thread.

Places I've been
London - no place for old men
Paris - went as part of school trip in ’60s. Made me ill
Thessaloniki - only saw the airport

Never been, but would quite fancy if the borders came down
Amsterdam canals/drugs/paintings
Dublin anglophone (ish)/Joyce/Flann O'Brien
Bruges pretty in pictures

No idea/interest
(I presume you don't want to hear about football and other prejudices)

Krakow
Seville
Rome
Munich
Florence
Prague
Madrid
Vienna
Copenhagen
Milan
Budapest
Stockholm
Warsaw

Helsinki

Hope that helps ;)

Of those, I've only been to Paris, Barcelona, London, Amsterdam, Munich, Brussels, Venice, and Dublin, aside from a couple of hours in Rome. And it's been a lifetime since I've been to Paris.

So, roughly:

Top Draweure
Brussels
Amsterdam
Barcelona

Reasonablé
Paris
Dublin

*gallic shrug*
Venice
London
Munich

I'd always wanted to go to Vienna when I read about the giant dollops of whipped cream they slather onto their coffee.

Rome - beautiful place. I’d move there in a shot if I had the language/any other skills.
Paris - an edgier version of Rome.
Munich - beautiful but boring, seems to close down at 10.
London - has its uses.
Venice - good for a night or two. Impossible to get yer bearings.
Valencia - Venice with no canals (actually it might) and a giant alien spacecraft.
Dublin - too many Irish.
Copenhagen - incredibly dull. Closed on Sundays.

I was there last November for work, going again next week.

It's scruffy and there's graffiti everywhere at the moment, but I wouldn't call it a shithole. Same with Istanbul.

I’ve been to all of these. To be honest I think they’re all great, I’d snatch your hand off if you offered me the chance to go to any of them again.

Also very nice, though not on the list:

Moscow
St Petersburg
Plovdiv
Vilnius
Riga

I like Nicosia and Bucharest a lot too, although both are pretty rundown at the moment.

Sofia really is a shithole.

That's the European city I've been to more than any other. I've got to go there again with work next month. What's worse, we don't even get to stay in the city centre any more, but out by The Mall, where you get the appalling tower blocks coupled with an absence of any kind of local culture.

I did a higher education fair in that awful Stalinist monstrosity the National Palace of Culture a few years ago, hardly anybody came, and the place evidently hadn't been decorated since 1957.

We did go to a very nice restaurant one evening, and afterwards my colleague Tom and I found a decent bar that played nothing but Black Sabbath. But that's about the best I can say for the place.
