I'm quite happy to consider different takes on this. I don't have a very high regard for Peter Hitchens myself though,he says a lot of stuff to get attention - a home counties Julie Burchill with an Oxbridge education.
Still, I would think the evidence that Putin is a dictator who has silenced any opposition ruthlessly ( just look at those who have been assassinated) and who will ride roughshod over any law, international or otherwise, pretty overwhelming.

Yet we pander to Xi Jinping, who runs a country with arguably a far worse human rights record than Russia, but believe Putin to be a monster.

If Putin's Russia made lots of stuff that was sold in the West then I suspect we would treat him far more agreeably.

NATO was created to meet the threat of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact doesn't exist anymore so why does NATO?

In what way is the presumed fact (I'm not disputing it, the man is clearly a criminal) that someone is a tyrant in his country in any way the legitimate concern of any other state? You'd be hard pressed to find any nation in the world that is not ultimately ruled by criminal concerns dedicated to their own enrichment. And there is absolutely nothing any of us can do about this, so why spend a minute of our precious lives getting upset and ansty about it.
I don't believe Jimbo is always 'wrong', I just think he's driven up a bind alley and is determined that the best way out is by demolishing the buildings ahead of him by running at them head first
