Famous people from your hometown

Postby sloopjohnc » 13 Feb 2018, 21:42

Today I was reading an article on Nick Park, the writer and animator of Wallace and Gromit, and who has a new movie out, and made it in Preston, his hometown. I know that a person on her lived a long time in Preston, and I thought of famous people from my hometown and thought it would be kind of fun to find out what famous people were from boardmembers' hometowns. Heres' mine:

Redwood City

Kenny Ortega - director and choreographer (High School Musical)
Jeff Clark - big wave surfer and organizer of Mavericks' big wave competition
Linda Cardellini - actress (Freaks and Geeks) Our band played her dad's 40th birthday party
Cedric Bixler-Zavala - singer for Mars Volta
Julian Edelman, Davante Adams - wide receivers in NFL
Kevin Bass, Daniel Nava, Eric Byrnes - former and current pro baseball players

Fremont (I've lived there 25+ years) and my kids' hometown

Shawon Dunston, Dennis Eckersley - former pro baseball players
Lamond Murray - former NBA player
Pat Tillman, Gary Plummer - former NFL players
Kristi Yamaguchi - Olympic gold medalist figure skater
Karen Chen - current Olympic figure skater
Robb Flynn - guitarist for Forbidden and Machine Head
Helen Wills Moody - women's tennis player (Olympic champion and 31 Grand Slam titles)
Vinod Dham - father of Intel Pentium
Don Hertzfeldt - animator

In general.

Knowing the inventor of the anal chug doesn't count.

John Squire and Ian Brown met at school here, I'm not sure how and when they came to the area. Morrissey lived here for a while, and I think he still owns the house. Johnny Marr still lives round here, I've seen him jogging in a gold tracksuit and looking embalmed in the middle of Tesco.

Neighbourhood where I grew up, (3 miles north of where I am now)

Louis Theroux - I heard him yapping on one day about "the frying pan", a place we used to cycle as kids.
Timothy West and Prunella Scales.
Various well known prisoners for varying times in the local high security prison - Ronnie Biggs, one of the Krays, John Stonehouse, James Earl Ray.
Sadiq Khan went to the boys' comprehensive down the road.

Frank Bruno went to the boys' comprehensive up the road. The school was later transformed into luxury flats: John Taylor of Duran Duran bought one, as did Carol Decker from T'Pau. I used to go to Brownies there, it was a magnificent but very creepy building. Local rumour had it that Rudolph Hess was incarcerated there for a time...

Where I live now.

Sadiq Khan is round the corner.

Thomas Haden Church went to my high school, a few years before I was there.

The guys in Ween grew up across the bridge from me, and I was in a high school band with two guys who are now in the Dean Ween Group.

I'm not even going to try to answer the question about LA. Start with Everyone Who Is Famous and start pulling off the ones not originally from LA, nor who live here now that they have money.

Nobody proper famous ever came out of Whitehaven - and from the whole county there’s only Melvyn Bragg, I think.

It's almost impressive how FEW famous people there are from Johannesburg... It's a really big city.

Elon musk went to my dad's school, though.

I was born in Oakville, Ontario, moved to Ottawa, Ontario when I was four, then moved to Cornwall, Ontario when I was six, then moved to Belleville, Ontario when I was twelve, then moved to Toronto when I left home at eighteen. Somebody else can check to see if any famous people came from any of those places if they're interested.

Nobody famous who's from New York is actually from New York; they're all from outlying places like Long Island and whatnot.

From Wallingford? Jeez...

Agatha Christie - lived at Winterbrook House for a great deal of her life. Is buried at Cholsey, the adjoining village.

Charlie Brooker - went to school at the same school I did, lived in Brightwell-Cum-Sotwell, another adjoining village.

Sir William Blackstone - The Judge who wrote "Commentaries On The Law Of England" which became pretty much the basis for law in the USA (it is still quoted in the Supreme Court ) and Common Law in the UK. I used to live in Blackstone Road and went to Blackstone School .... that's my claim to fame.

Though that list does miss out The Tansads and The Railway Children, if the notion of fame can be stretched somewhat.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
