‘Jolly Ups’

Who came up with that name? It’s idiotic!

Anyway...

I enjoyed Prague 2006 enormously. You were probably too stressed.

I voted for the third option.

I'm not mad keen on large ish groups of people. It becomes a bit "waaah!" and if you get stuck with people you don't quite click with the night can be a right off

There are BCbers I'd meet up with but there's more than a few I wouldn't cross the road to chat to and a few I'd actively like to avoid as well.

I enjoyed the jolly up I did go to well enough but I was too drunk

I've enjoyed them all. People who are jerks on here are invariably nice in person, there's never a lack of good conversation, and there are a few I know I'd be close friends with if we saw each other more often. Those I don't click with are also fine, because there are always plenty of people for them to talk to.

I don't think they're "waaah!" enough, BTW. The only fault of jolly ups is that sometimes people fail to realize the enormity of what's going on -- people you have talked with for 15 years, you are finally getting to meet -- and so people are sometimes too reserved and don't want to get into talking.

Suppose I had a mini JU with sense and evil Dave. Good to meet them, and we had the craic.

I agree with both of you. The two posts aren't contradictory, really.

Initially people are wary but then there's folk who've already met, and booze plays its part, and things can get shouty and silly. But it can be a nerve-wracking thing, meeting someone you've got to know (in many cases very well) over years, for the first time. There's so much you can say, but often it's awkward. I'm not even sure why.

I don't like big groups at all. Edinburgh 2013 was OK, but the pub was crowded and loud and dark, as pubs tend to be. I didn't know who the fuck Dougie was - nobody introduced him, he didn't make a move to tell me either (the same thing happened with Sarah) but we had a quieter time in Berlin a couple of years ago doing the Hansa Studios and going for a posh meal - and that was great. There are quite a few BCBers I've met, and would like to meet, in those kinds of circumstances.

Paris 2008 was great fun. The first night in the wee pub was amazing, everyone was so sweet and funny, I had a blast. And the jam was wonderful too.

The worst part about them is because I'm from the SF Bay Area, people think I must like the Grateful Dead.

I hate the Grateful Dead.
