Thomas Fire and other fires in Southern California

Postby toomanyhatz » 05 Dec 2017, 18:48

Scary, and not too far from us.

We're fine (though of all days to be on Jury Duty in Ventura, probably within a mile or two) and so is Muskrat (who I'm pretty sure is our only other Ventura County resident), but we've both had power outages, and it's smokey, hard to breathe and spreading quickly. And some of our LA residents might be close to other fires.

Hopefully it'll be contained quickly, but vicious winds are making it pretty tough for firefighters to do their job.

The good news is, I haven't heard of any deaths so far. But 27,000 evacuations! That's crazy. And that was over an hour ago, and it only seems to be getting worse.

I heard on the news this morning, the Ventura fire jumped Hwy 101 and is up to 50,000 acres burned.

The Napa/Sonoma fires totaled 220,000 acres and it sounds like SoCal is quickly getting up to that.

Our database vendor in the high desert says the fires are 15 miles from his house. The smoke's so bad it's setting off his fire alarms inside.

the "Creek Fire" is supposedly O% contained but the freeways were open and we only saw smoke by morning so they're doing something right.
just when we sighed for relief we find out the Sepulveda Pass is on fire. never a dull moment.

Here's the Ventura fire last night near Hwy 101, or the PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy), as they call it down south. 101 is one of the two main highways running north and south from the top of the state to the bottom. It's much closer to populated areas than the other, which runs down the middle of the state, Hwy 5.

We are about two miles or three from the Sepulveda Pass Fire...Lots of smoke and ash, but at least the freeway is open again...

A friend of mine retired last year and moved to Ojai. She's been in LA for the past few days, waiting to find out if her house is still there. She described seeing huge walls of fire while people were trying to get their horses into vehicles. The desert winds are now expected to last through the weekend. Life can sure turn on a dime.

When the Napa/Sonoma fires were going on, I couldn't even see the East Bay hills, which are only two miles from my place. Napa is about 60 miles away.

We're getting smoke from SoCal, which is about 450 miles away.

it's so horrifying. it looks like hell on earth.

all the floods i've been through... there's still that chance of actually surviving if you can't get out in time.

it's just... my heart goes out.
