What a plonker

Postby Driftwood Affirmations » 27 Nov 2017, 13:10

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/21/explorer-benedict-allen-i-was-not-lost-and-did-not-need-to-be-rescued

I'll stay with a prize plonker or plum but what he put his wife and kids through, the time, money and personnel required to recover him, I don't believe he deserves more than a satsuma for Christmas.

Here's an earlier article on him re: the same jaunt -

I’ve a low opinion of these types. Do whatever you want when you’re young and carefree, but when you take on the responsibilities of parenthood your kids should trump selfish whims of ‘exploring’.

Same goes for mountaineering, and wingsuit antics.
Heyyyy!

Hell, do whatever the heck you want. It'd be nice if there was a comprehensive life insurance policy, though.
If you've got nothing to do, don't do it here.

I remember seeing this doc on C4 where Bear Grylls and a posh mate of his were going to do a powered paraglide type thing over Mt Everest.

Much of the film focussed on how worried their wives/girlfriends were (with lots of kids in tow at base camp).

Until that point Mr Grylls hadn't really impinged on my world. This pointless and expensive (and apparently dangerous) stunt though, with all the attendant hand-wringing spouses making dinner back a camp etc, made me think he was a pointless twat... And nothing I've seen since - especially his toe-curling wilderness prayer session with an embarrassed Pres Obama - has persuaded me otherwise.

That was truly cringeworthy, wasn't it.
I remember chatting with Betty Denim on Facebook about it.

I do miss her.
