I read about it. I am in two minds: this "presentation" is as slick as it gets, and the language used has the true hallmarks of neoliberal newspeak: we're on the road to full liberty, to free market competition, we're gonna end that dreadful 'socialist' regulation, and we'll all be better off in the end.

On the surface: who can be against 'more liberty'?

Deeper: the richest and most powerful will get to determine what you can have access to, at what speed, and at what price. Which is the de-democratization of the web, in the end.

My second thought: this is not the first time. And there's a very large undercurrent of decent people, who will find ways to keep things as open as possible. Moreover: who in earnest thinks that the mainstream types of entertainment are important at all? Hey, I'd return to a phone modem to get what I really want to read, hear, and see. Or to smoke signals, for that matter.

But of course, it's a bad development; wait, it's not development at all, it's regression.

That was pretty well known when he hired his FCC chief, who has been part of lawsuits with his previous company to end net neutrality.

I was in the cellular industry for a few years and people were very worried about the last appointed FCC chief who had been among other things, a lobbyist for broadband carriers, who would love to charge exclusive streaming rates. He turned out to be a huge advocate for net neutrality and did lots of great things to keep small and big providers on an even keel.

A couple more things. 4G, which is all about streaming data, eats up broadband and 5G is quickly coming down the pike. And connected IoT devices take up even more. I just came back from a Super Computing conference and big data and its demand on the pipeline took up lots of talk.

It's a little chicken and egg. People buy into streaming services like Netflix, which hogs up the carriers, and they feel like they need to charge more to compensate. So do carriers charge more for better or higher bandwidth or do they push it on companies like Netflix or ESPN which will have to charge more? Either way, the consumer pays more.

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Alphabet (Google) has been warning about too many cars on the Internet highway for years now.

Yeah the fix was in on this from the jump.

The new spin on ending net neutrality I heard on the radio on the way to work is they're defining the Internet as a utility, thus different rates for different folks.

For example, in California, farmers or agriculture pays much less for water than regular consumers or other types of businesses. How they define "agriculture" as far as large volume net users is yet to be defined.

now it's up to the great unwashed. I mean, they've tried to ram this through before. Hopefully all this claptrap about throwing off the shackles will motivate people to light up some motherfucking switchboards. we did it before and we can do it again.

secretly, I think we're doomed. I'm trying to convince myself we can fight these bastards. did I convince you?
I didn't think so.

I mean, I can't convince Joe Blow about global warming but certainly I should be able to convince him that people shouldn't fuck with his Internet!
If i can't do THAT, what good am I, really?

There must be ways -

in Holland, there will be a referendum about a new law, that allows the government far-reaching control and surveillance methods - in a dangerous way*).

All mail-, phone-, and other messages are prey for scrutiny, without prior warnings or rulings.

Now: how can we sabotage this thing on day 1?

If two or three million Dutch people immediately start messaging like mad with texts and calls that threaten our politicians and business leaders; that promise terror attacks in cities and in sports arenas, about how to make the most terrible bombs, how to do unspeakable acts to famous people, and so on.

It's called: flooding, I believe.

*) IMHO, but I do have good reasons. Feel free to ask.

OK. It's too late to do a diligent search, but tomorrow I'll make an effort - provided that my regular visit to the dentist won't, ahem, 'disrupt' my day structure (no worry, it's control and a bit of cleansing).

Meanwhile, a little riddle: name the year, the persons, and explain the absence of IT technology in this photo:

I'd like to think that this won't affect internet in Canada, but under Trump, and with NAFTA negotiations ongoing, I guess anything could happen. Trudeau and the CRTC (Canada's version of the FCC) have pledged to maintain net neutrality, and have even declared broadband access to be a basic service for all, but I'm still a bit worried.

Though I'm Dutch (and not that informed about overseas politics), I don't see much reason to sit back and relax, no.

I must tell you this: I have the article about DJT, featuring this B&W piccie of him and his first spouse in '70s NYC (note the superb retro taste, even then already), on paper. I showed only the photo to 4 people until now, covering the text with my thumb diligently.

I asked who they thought this might be. The answers were:

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and his wife Máxima (3 times).

Former Dutch secretary for housing, spatial planning, and the environment Ed Nijpels (1 time).

I kid you not, and all four respondents are normal people (3 of them highly educated).

Well, I had to laugh a bit, as you will understand.

Here's the article itself, and two companion pieces, by prof. Kim Phillips-Fein:

This was an interesting take on deregulating the internet and echoes what I had been thinking and that was, what the fuck. Deregulate and lets see what shakes out. Corbett, the host, a fellow expat in Japan, reminded me that Japan already has a deregulated internet and has a plethora of providers competing and vying for my patronage and we have much faster internet speeds than the US. Americans may think their internet is fine and should stay as it is but I know when go back internet surfing feels different, more sluggish. Maybe with deregulation things will get better for my fellow 'mercans.

Seriously???
Competition?
Jefferey Fucking Tucker???

Let’s have a minimum wage thread with insight from Ray Kroc!
Maybe you can find a video of Donald Trump to enliven a thread about women’s rights!

Shit Jimbo, “devil’s advocate” is one thing, are you really so bored that this knee jerk contrarianism seems like time well spent?

Your “conspiracy” road is leading right to “anything goes” capitalism? WTF?

I remember when Carter deregulated the airlines and I got $100 flights to London. I don't have a smart phone but last night I had a student who recently joined up with a plan and got a brand new iPhone 8 and all-you-use service for $50 a month.

And maybe a deregulated internet won't cow-tow to the government which stupidly blocks 9/11 sites or RT and Sputnik which tell the truth about shit.

And Comcast and Verizon actually do own the pipes which enter your house so ideally they should be able to do whatever they want including slowing or speeding them up. The solution then are more choices for pipe providers who will then maybe offer even faster service than the two biggies. The libertarian competition idea is a good idea.
