There is one school of thought that says Russia is doomed whatever it does. It's a cursed nation - partly because of its sheer size. And any problems were compounded by central planning, which was a feature of the Communist era.

I can't pretend I've read widely on Russia (Imperium is a great book, btw) but I know it's rich in natural resources. But of course almost nobody benefits from that.

Yeah, I can't watch it because I despise that man more than anyone else walking this earth.

Oh for sure. It has a terrific existential crisis of identity that surrounds it. A macho culture that sits defiantly outside of both Europe and Asia but dominates both like a pugnacious and alcoholic uncle at family gatherings.

The only good things I can think of were Tarkovsky and Shostakovich. The Soviet Union did defeat Nazi Germany, but their intentions to do so were not couched in the moral spirt of the Allies, given that they occupied Eastern Europe for 40 years afterwards. The Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact of 1939 tells you everything you need to know about Soviet intentions during that conflict. Stalin didn't give a fuck about anyone.

It was quite interesting spending time in Latvia and thinking about the screwed up history of my homeland - a football to be fought over between the Germans and the Russians for thousands of years. They're trying to find their way as an independent nation and sometimes it's a struggle.

Having spent some time visiting both the Cheka (localized KGB) museum and talking to my aunt's boyfriend, who had been sent to Siberia as a young man, I came away with a fairly strong impression of Russians involved in keeping the government affairs running smoothly. I don't care for them. My opinion of Nazis involved in government affairs was not any more positive.

I am glad to see my familial homeland in the struggle that is independence, and not asking the Russians to come back and take over again. I think of that period, when the Soviet Union was in charge, as the end of a long national nightmare.

Of course, that they may have decided to build a buffer between themselves and all the other European countries that had seemingly taken it in turns to invade Russia in previous times was, of course, completely unfair and really wasn't playing the game, old chap.

Absolute rot and you know it. It was imperialism continued in socialist drag.
