Why are all our heroes such cunts?

I had no idea Ryan Adam's was meant to be that powerful or influential. I thought of him as a bit of a has been who was briefly popular at the turn of the millennium but whose moment in the sun had passed long ago.

Sorry to have been a disappointment. I'll try to be a better person.

I am a big fan of Ryan Adam, but always knew he was a bit of a dick, though this is even worse than I thought. Looks like I will have to separate the art from the artist. He has good company though. Sinatra (scumbag to women), Elvis (young girls), Jimmy Page (ditto), Chuck Perry (convicted sex offender), Lee Lewis (where do we start), Miles Davis (pimp, women beater), Lennon (women beater and gaslighter), Clapton (misogynist, racist, gaslighter), James Brown (violence to women, controlling), Marvin Gaye (young girls, violent abuse), Michael Gira (abused his influence for sex), Townshend ( leaving aside the conviction, comes over as a self pitying sex pest stalker in his autobiography), Sid Vicious, MES arrested in NYC for beating Julia Nagle, treated Brix like dirt) on and on and on.

He certainly doesn’t wield the power of Harvey Weinstein or a network executive, but in the mediocre, middling world of Americana/pop crossover, he’s a major figure.

Introductory paragraphs here . . .

NYT wrote:For nearly two decades, Ryan Adams, one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of his generation, has been heralded as a mercurial creative genius and a respected industry tastemaker.

Equal parts punk-rock folk hero and romantic troubadour, Adams, 44, has 16 albums and seven Grammy nominations to his name. He has overseen music by Willie Nelson, written a Tim McGraw hit and recorded with John Mayer.

He has also taken a special interest in the trajectory of female artists, especially younger ones, championing them onstage, across social media and in the studio, where his stamp of approval can jump-start careers.

Some now say that Adams’s rock-star patronage masked a darker reality. In interviews, seven women and more than a dozen associates described a pattern of manipulative behavior in which Adams dangled career opportunities while simultaneously pursuing female artists for sex. In some cases, they said, he would turn domineering and vengeful, jerking away his offers of support when spurned, and subjecting women to emotional and verbal abuse, and harassment in texts and on social media. The accounts have been corroborated by family members or friends who were present at the time, as well as by correspondence from Adams reviewed by The New York Times.

While I'm a fan of Ryan Adams I'm not too surprised by this. It's pretty published that he can be a dick. Mandy Moore talked about his emotional abuse of her.

And even if he had gone through the trial and publicly been declared innocent (rather than accept an official warning and be put on a list for x years), half the people still would never believe it.

Far from being "completely exonerated", PT was placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

As for the book, his atypically boring autobiog did indeed come out a few years back (I know because i bought and read the thing and rather wish I hadn't bothered). Sadly, his scathing expose on high-street banks in the UK supporting paedophilia seems to remain unpublished.

Well, he was given an option, and so chose to be put on the list rather than go through a full public trial in which the public would "make up its own mind" no matter what the facts turned out to be. But the police reported they found absolutely nothing incriminating, and the child abuse group that initially denied he had contacted them before entering his CC info (telling them what he was doing) later confirmed that he had done so, so he didn't lie about that after all, as many initially believed.

I enjoyed the book because it shed some new light on some things, but it was indeed dry, ponderous reading. :)
