I always assumed it was a play on words: Made Marion on her tiptoed feet.

No doubt, now you point it out.
But she was Robin Hood's bird. Not William Tell's

Maybe he felt like William Tell because he was making overtures to young Marion.

It should be Robin Hood but it just wouldn't sound right

Why wouldn't it?
It scans the same.
3 syllables with the stress on the third.
You're just used to hearing it how it is.

Tell rhymes with shell. Makes a difference.

But wait! He could have written the tune when he was 21 and the lyrics approximately a year later.

Or even a few minutes later if he wrote it around midnight going into his birthday! I think in general people think of a "song" as a combination of music and lyrics - but I don't insist on it.

It never occurred to me that it might be there to rhyme.
It's not a natural rhyming point, is it?
Not like the way the 2nd and 4th lines are.
"Pulling mussels from a shell" seems like a payoff line - almost like a one line (two actually as it's repeated) chorus in itself. The four lines before are more bridge than chorus.

But yeah, whatever.
Their lyrics have always been charming, if somewhat stinky.

Some years back now I bought the Mobile Fidelity CD of East Side Story. The booklet included the printed lyrics - I'd never seen them on paper before. I was amazed, reading them, how awkward or just plain nonsensical many of them were.

That I had never noticed this after listening to the album a hundred times or so could, I suppose, be a testament to their musicality (which always counts for more than literal meaning anyway, by my lights).

As I always point out, I really don't take a lot of notice of pop lyrics.
Doing so is an invitation to disappointment.
