Proofreaders Corner Nr. 2133

Postby Neige » 14 Sep 2017, 12:55

Another question arose in my work today.

"Pay easily using the QR code - no more tedious typing in numbers".

Is it o.k. like this? Or should it be "...typing in of numbers"?

Your views would be very welcome.

It scans much better with the 'of' in there.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

I'd go with the first.

Or even "no more tedious typing numbers"

I think that "no more tedious typing of numbers" would work well.

No more tedious number typing. Or even no more tedious typing.

Pay using cash, ffs. ;-)

But yeah, "no more tedious typing in of numbers" works for me. There's less ambiguity; "typing in numbers" could mean lots of people typing, "typing of numbers" could mean sorting numbers into types.

Obviously, context should make it clear, but I still prefer it.

Thank you DF, excellent: you were the second voice confirming my own hunch (and also explained what made me feel unconfortable). I've suggested this version to the client.

And thanks to everyone else for chiming in, much appreciated!
