it seems no word has a correct meaning until you define it for us morons, Sahib.

I dare say he makes a better case for why the term bothers him than you do.
a good article worth regarding. still, someone who calls himself "a liberal hawk" should be taken with a grain of salt when lecturing progressives.

I do think, while he dislikes the term as much as you, that he doesn't have as big a problem with etymology as you do. I think it's just a matter of time before what you and he see as the words misuse will not matter just as people who don't think we should say "ain't" didn't matter in the long run.

I concede that he's a better writer than me.

I don't think he has enough trouble with etymology. It isn't as simple as people using a word in a way that's grammatically incorrect. When you assign new meaning to words because it feels right to you, you begin to lose those words altogether.

In this case, Chait is correct in pointing out that this particular misuse is a purposeful attempt to claim unearned rhetorical ground.

people say "literally" when they mean "figuratively". I don't know what their motive is but nowadays the dictionary backs them up when they do it.

Davey the Fat Boy wrote:Hatz...where'd you see that definition? It doesn't fit either word.

A neoliberal is a person who believes that markets should be almost completely unregulated by government. The suffix "liberal" does not refer to the left of the political spectrum, but rather the 19th century conception of liberalism that held that laissez-faire policies were always better than government encroachment on liberty.

Yes, I've always understood it as a term from the economic sphere rather than politics, referring to Milton Friedman's Chicago Boys and their ilk.

Sorry it's ten days later and that's all I have to offer!
