cd storage?

Postby rorebhoy » 06 Jul 2017, 12:28

This has probably been done before, but wasn't able to find anything from searching.
Basically, I'm looking for some decent storage furniture for my cds. Currently I have a good number of the Billy/Gnedby narrow storage units from Ikea, that hold 180 cds per unit. These are fine and dandy, but don't look great when there are multiple units put side-to-side. I'm looking for something that would hold more per unit, and which doesn't look hideous - any ideas?

I find CD storage a real pain. The best thing I've got capacity wise is one of these rotating towers from Ikea, which holds 440 CDs:

Doesn't look great though.

The rest are shoved in record shelving, sets of drawers, and a lovely dark-oak cabinet I bought from a shop in Bowness. Even the wife approves of that one.

I got a flight case on ebay for 500 cds (1000 without booklet) in soft case on a railing

Got rid of all the jewel cases and packed them all away. So I still have them but they're out of sight

Surely plastic sleeves book is the best option to keep off dust and less chance of scratching. Just an idea. Don't know what you'd do with the inlay card though, suppose you could put it in the sleeve as well.

We got two bookcases made by local carpenters with shelf heights suitable for CDs. About 6' tall, 3' wide.

I don't like the cardboard sleeves that many CDs come in. The micro-LP ones, I mean.

They may look good, and be better for the environment, but they cause scratches. The only option is to take out the CD in slow, slow motion. Or to re-house it in a standard case.
The invisible and the non-existing very much look alike.

How much did you pay the carpenter for the CD racks if you don't mind me asking?
I've just had a quote from someone who was only an odd job man, not even a qualified carpenter as far as I know, for some drawer racks for my comic collection and he wanted £1350. Thought this was madness, or am I just out of touch?

I think the last one was twenty years ago, and it was under £200.

Which probably doesn't help. I've no idea how much one would cost now and suspect your comics storage is more complicated than a bookcase affair.

I buy those mini-crates that hold about 40 and stack up on top of each other, leaning them against a wall for support. In my living room I have about 7 rows stacked 10 to 12 crates high.

I make bespoke cd racks. A unit 1200 wide and 1800mm high, painted and installed would be about £400

These ones are for DVD's and cd's.

Of course I am far too far away to be of any help, but you should be able to find someone to build them for a similar sum.

Of course, they won't be as good...

But the CDs you pit in them will be a hell of a lot better.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to attempt to make something myself.
