Corbyn steps up to the microphone, and starts as he means to go on...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39649119

"Corbyn's speech received a standing ovation from the invited audience of Labour members and was designed, in part, to motivate newer recruits in particular to campaign over the next seven weeks. It could also shore up the party's core support."

I expect May's rediculous speech was to a group of invited sycophants too. You need to try to at least pretend to be fair.

Corbyn will only speak to groups of invited Labour party members. On the upside, he is guaranteed 400,000 votes at the general election. This should ensure that he, Emily Thornberry and Dianne Abbott all keep their seats, at the very least. As a strategy for winning a general election I suspect is unlikely to succeed.

Itv have announced they are hosting a debate.
May will look even more chaotic if she bottles it.

Didnt this happen last time?

It has been proven that TV debates are usually harmful to an incumbent. You can't blame May for dodging it. Also, where does this leave Corbyn's pledge never to share a platform with a tory?

May's speech in Bolton was to Tory party members only, and she didn't take questions.

Who do you invite ? It's an odd business since 2015 when it first loomed it's head.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_general_election_debates,_2015

Sturgeon and Wood, as per 2015, lead their parties but are not standing for Westminster election themselves. The Green Party leadership is a job-share and they have one MP. The DUP are the fifth largest party but I would doubt Arlene Foster would want to speak (she has bigger fish to fry at present) and again is not standing for election herself.
So the only party leaders hypothetically debating and personally standing for re-election would be Corbyn, Farron, May and Lucas.

And yet you are deep down a closet Tory  . You are happy to live in an area that is Tory for one thing, reaping the benefits of the type of civic society it promulgates.

Civic society? It's all sharp elbows and peeks through curtains here. There are some nice places to eat, but I don't think that's anything to do with Graham Brady MP.

Toby wrote:I think it entirely depends on the definition of "rich".

"Rich" to me at least, is comfortably well off. Sending your kids to private school (fees are around £15 to 18K a year). Being able to invest freely. Going somewhere hot at Xmas, Skiing at feb half-term.

My wife earns around £70K, but I don't work. We can afford to go on a 2 week holiday once a year, we aren't mortgaged to the hilt, go out to eat maybe twice a month and can save a bit of money each month. But rich? No.

I see, you're not rich but you can "afford to go on a 2 week holiday once a year, we aren't mortgaged to the hilt, go out to eat maybe twice a month and can save a bit of money each month." Have a word with yourself, Toby.
It's a bit like a reverse version of Illusory Superiority where every thinks they are better than the average driver. Everyone thinks they are not rich because they compare themselves to those better off. But £70,000 a year put you in the top 5% of earners. Just because some people earn £150,000 a year that doesn't stop £70k a year being rich.

And just to be factually correct he said, "£70,000 to £80,000 a year" so he's not set a specific figure.

He got this figure from surveys, as this was the income that most people have where they say they would happily pay a bit more tax. Obviously this doesn't include Tories who would rather pay no tax and just fund their own "civic society"

Actually I'd like to see more people talking about wealth. There are some people with hoards of wealth, through land and housing, that is more important to tax than income.

If we had a second child, we certainly wouldn't be able to do some of those things. And I suspect our 2 week holiday abroad will vanish when school term starts.

We live in a modest 2 bedroom house in a relatively working-class area of Tunbridge Wells and I drive a crappy 15 year old Honda Civic.

I don't see how those things qualify us as being "rich" personally. I guess if you define "rich" as being "not poor" then you might, but I hope someone of your supposed intellect might have a bit more imagination than that.

Very good. What you mean is that you wouldn't be able to live the life you currently live. that's no the same as "not being rich". And what is a "relatively working class area"? I don't know what that means. Predominantly?
I also live in a modest 2 bed terraced house (well, we've moved into the attic now too). But we bought it. We have a mortgage on it which we will pay up in 10 years. And I'm not on £70,000. Our combined incomes are around £80,000. We're rich, in the sense that we are "not poor" and there are things we could curtail if we needed to. I don't have much disposable income at the end of each month, partly because our mortgage is pretty big, but not having disposable income is not the same as not being rich. We don't own property but don't kid yourself that we (you and me) are not well off. Now I understand why someone of your supposed intellect is a Tory.
