Like all cod socialists, you seem to have completely forgotten about the thirteen years of Labour government, when all the policies you mention as being Tory policies, were carried out with some enthusiasm. Certainly much of the financial burden on Schools and Hospitals is down to the Labour party's voracious appetite for Private finance initiatives, and those extortionate 30 year fixed interest repayments Blair was so keen to " take advantage " of.

I haven't forgotten I just consider Blair to be more Tory than socialist. Always have done.
Shit as he was, he was still a million times better than the tory alternative. William Hague  , Michael Howerd  Ian fucking Duncan aresehole Smith

We may have ended up in the shite, but we dodged a few bullets on our way down the pan.

Which surely plays into Toby's theory of the tory's being the natural party of government. If you regard Blair as a tory, then we have had a conservative government since 1979, and Labour really are dead.

Blair was a tory but Labour are not the Tories.
They managed to change some things for the better, shift the paradigm a bit - check out Osbourne crowing about the living wage!
And you and I both know that the shit that Blair pulled loff would at least have been as bad under any of the three stooges mentioned above. You think Hague wouldn't have followed W into Iraq  right

Conjecture. I don't agree they would have concocted the dodgy dossier, or lied to parliament in quite the same way. Note how Cameron bowed to parliament over bombing Syria. Blair would have lied and lied and bombed them anyway.

Yes you do. To appease the swivel eyed wing of his party.

You're being disingenuous - you fully well know that's the reason.

Not at all. He was on a roll. And then he calls a referendum on something he clearly has given absolutely no thought to. He had no idea what the mood of the country was. He had done nothing to measure the mood of our European partners, and he had no plans on what he would do if we voted leave. It is almost as if decided to do it on a whim.

In that case you're ignoring the obvious. The only reason he agreed to the Brexit vote was because the right wing of his party had told him they wouldn't support him unless he did so. So - no Dave as PM.

So, as always, the Conservative Leader puts their own career in front of the good of the country.

What do people think about John McDonnell saying if you earn over £70K a year, you are rich?

Another own goal there I think.

It's true isn't it?
What percentage of the population earn over £70k?
5%?

It's certainly more than double the average salary.

There is something deeply unedifying about him, it must be said.

He is like Tebbit was to Thatcher. And Watson is like Howe.

It seems to be 10%.

Surely earning more than twice the average makes you rich doesn't it?

I did read that in order to buy a flat in London these days , you need to be earning at least 70K. Which would imply that it was a basic requirement , rather than being rich. Of course , in the rest of the UK , 70K would be a very comfortable salary.

Not if your outgoings are more than triple.

I think it entirely depends on the definition of "rich".

"Rich" to me at least, is comfortably well off. Sending your kids to private school (fees are around £15 to 18K a year). Being able to invest freely. Going somewhere hot at Xmas, Skiing at feb half-term.

My wife earns around £70K, but I don't work. We can afford to go on a 2 week holiday once a year, we aren't mortgaged to the hilt, go out to eat maybe twice a month and can save a bit of money each month. But rich? No.

Isn't that definition for one person, not a couple though?

OK look at it another way. Being in the top 10% of earners makes you rich by most people's standards - it's all relative of course.

If your outgoings are high it's because you have expensive tastes or live somewhere desirable.

Surely that would depend on the area, and a presumption that you live on your own? £70k would be a very comfortable salary, even in London.

*edit Hmm - salary graph appears to be fucked when comparing against area.

If you have a mortgage of 2K a month ( average in London), a car loan, ( normal), and two kids ( average), you would be a JAM in London.

But clearly he wasn't talking about London, he was talking about the UK as a whole.
