Some guys at a local high school in Napa, CA, were just accused of hazing and I hear more and more of this going on. On one sports website yesterday, I read about kids being sodomized as part of some sports hazing ritual.

In fact, I was just talking to a friend in Oregon, who played team sports since being a kid like me and through to college (he was a good athlete). I asked him, since we've both played team sports since the age of nine through to college, if we'd encountered any hazing. I never had, and I played football, basketball, baseball, water polo, wrestled, and swam on teams. The closet I came to any kind of hazing is when I was a freshman in water polo and a senior dunked me under the water and held me down a little while for no reason at one practice. Once, and that was it. He agreed. And I don't know any guys my age, who all played team sports, where that happened - from youth sports to college.

I had friends who wanted me to join their fraternities and my first response, without telling them, was, "Fuck that shit. I'm not doing any bullshit hazing shit to join any group of fucking guys." Would never happen. It's okay if they wanted to put up with that nonsense, but I was never that needy, for lack of better word. Didn't ever need friends that bad.

This hazing shit is some kind of weird, sadistic, homo-erotic thing these guys have going on and any coach that knows of it and allows it to happen should be fired and never allowed to coach again for any sport.

I've never heard of it back in the day, male or female.

Now I'm curious: shall have to ask the nephew and neice....

The uber-bitchy stuff went on in Am-Dram, those guys and gals were mean but that was one particular society. Typically it was the luvvies trashing the technical (costume, lighting, props, etc) members.

Now I think on, there were two men-only halls of residence so no idea what might have gone on there, if anything.

I was the most hazed pledge at Theta Chi in 1986. There was this one guy, "Bubba" (yes, you read that right) who hated me. He put me through so much shit that when I was finally initiated one guy told me he had never seen a pledge take so much abuse in his life! I can laugh at it now, but it freaked me out then. You really see someone's sadistic side in those situations. I remember one time I let slip that I didn't like the song "Muskrat Love" by Captain & Tenille. So he put it on a 90 minute cassette and played it continuously for hours to torture us. And he did it every fucking day for a week...

And that was just one of the things fit for family reading that I can mention...

When I worked for the students' union one guy from the rugby team (and to be fair the football team were just as bad if not worse) came to see my mate and colleague who was the student welfare officer. This guy had gotten completely rat-arsed and his team mates had attempted to - and I believe succeeded - shove a pool ball up his anus.

He was apparently very traumatised but refused to make a complaint because they were his mates!

There was no initiation for the SU, although you did have to be able to recite Clause 4 backwards in Russian.

Soggy biscuit was just some urban myth, wasn't it? You used to hear it about it growing up.

The closest I can think of, when I was high school age I lived near an exclusive prep school and sometimes went there to visit my friends, use their game room etc. so I had some friends on campus. There was a hazing incident where one guy - who even from a distance I knew was someone to avoid - was I think expelled for activities against some kid who wanted to join their club. The poor guy was thrown in the lake with his hands tied, and had an air hose used for tire inflation pushed up his butt and turned on, which caused him some internal injuries. Both things that could quite possibly have killed him.

That's not even college frat boy stuff... these kids were like 16.

My ex was in a sorority at UT. When I found out, I almost took back the proposal.
