Why on earth would anybody do that?

There was a promo interview he did for it on NPR's Morning Edition in which he basically stated that the only time religion is acceptable is when people have no other prospects for hope. As an atheist myself, I find this line of thinking just as juvenile, blinkered, elitist, irrational & counter-productive as religious extremism.
He goes after easy targets to prove his intellectual superiority. I consider myself secular, but I find his stance on religion to philosophically immature.

Actually it's not like I can say we're better at the political stuff these days. Has anyone managed to sit through an episode of Mock The Week?

I don't actively watch him. I catch a snippet here and there, usually because it caused a stir.

Let's face it, neither side can lord it over the other one now.

We ought to band together. Make sure the Aussies don't realise they have something over us.

Our restrictive immigration practices are the envy of the first world!
As for the topic, he is a smug cunt whose face is highly punchable. Typical Reddit-style atheist shitbag who refuses to meet his opponents at their best. Builder of strawmen, stacker of crowds, muncher of own dingdong.

Re: Bill Maher
Looks like he's escaped firing. One of this weeks guests is Ice Cube - should make for interesting viewing

That was the most cringe worthy episode I've seen in awhile. He took it on the chin so to speak but I get the feeling it took every bit of his being not to comeback with something while he was being lectured. The sense of enjoyment and smugness of some of the lecturers after they had finished their lecture was funny.

Re: Bill Maher
Eh, of the three Afro-American guests, only Ice Cube seemed to really take him to task. And the whole time, he was interrupting with "but you KNOW I didn't mean..." evasions, which just annoyed me. I thought his joke about Kathy Griffin owing him for taking her off the front page was funny, though.

I don't know I thought all 3 had a good go at him. By comebacks, I meant something smart and cheeky.

I saw that too - I thought Cube took him to task, diplomatically, and very articulately.
When he said, "That was your word for us for 400 years and now it's ours and you can't have it back," it summed it up pretty well.

Re: Bill Maher
Yea I'd agree with all above. He had about 10mins of contrition in him. Once that 10mins was up he just wanted to get on with this life, even though his guests weren't finished. I don't think he handled it well but here's the thing - how do you deal with it without being disingenuous? I think he tried to remain genuine to himself, which also made him look careless and unrepentant. Is that better or worse than someone weakly apologising just to save their career? I don't know, its interesting when it happens though.

Re: Bill Maher
I agree with almost every bad thing anybody in the thread has said but I think his show is important.
I was waiting for some "to go" food yesterday and had some time to kill. I flipped through the "Opinion" section of the L.A. Times.
there was an article about how you better not increase the taxes on the rich written by a banker. there was an article about how the TRUMP administrations cuts to public education were GOOD, much needed and did not go far enough. this column was written by someone who runs charter schools.
THIS is what passes for opinion in a large metropolitan news paper with an Ivory Tower Liberal Reputation. I think, as much as I think the guy is FAR too pleased with himself that we really need something like an HBO show with celebrities talking about their opinions. if nothing else, different opinions are represented. Say what you will about Ice Cube & Bill Maher - maybe it really was a "teaching moment". I don't think Bill learned jack shit but maybe some of the people I know who feel entitled to use that word gave it a second thought. I think things like that count for something.
