Oh aye. When those brown types were under the lash.

Geert or Geert?

There are 28 political parties fielding candidates in this election.

I am jealous.

Well, we have a series of right-wing parties now, nationalistic, anti-islam, patriottic as well as nostalgic, and they all share something with Wilders:

they're led by seriously unhinged people, without experience, with only a few, non-related, and unrealizable ideas.

In itself its a certain sign of our democracy being in a slump, simple shouters getting so much attention and coverage.

But these oddballs have in common that they take their votes from Wilders, is my prediction.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

From here it seems like a sign of strength since we are essentially trapped in a duopoly. One party far right, the other rightwing, but not quite as despicable at its fringe regarding social issues. But I do understand your point.

Cheers.

I just wanted to add a couple of things to put my message into perspective.

We do have a broad palette of political parties that demand to be taken seriously, more than Germany or the UK do, in terms of them being significantly represented in parliament:

VVD (comparable to your Conservatives, although our 'neoliberals' are quite prone to scandal, fraud, and involvement in criminal affairs, these days)

CDA (Christian Democratic Appeal - bit of an ecumenical party that addresses a wide range of Christians)

D66 (democrats that are in essence neoliberal, albeit with a social side to it, if that is possible at all)

PvdA (still comparable to Tony Blair's Third Way Labour - to the right of Corbyn's Labour)

Groen Links (our Green Party, heading for a solid 15 seats or so, as I am writing, mainly due to the rise of youngster Jesse Klaver; he looks good, is bright, and raised his own bar high - and seeing that he has no dark spots or failures in his past, he could do surprisingly well. Only danger is: more than all others he'd tied to his promises; compromises by him will be more to his disadvantage than is the case with any other major contender of today)

SP (socialist party - the only party the content of which exactly answers to what it says on the tin. Actually: they are truly social-democratic, devoid of any glamour, and of all parties the most dedicated to grass-roots work, in normal city and town boroughs and districts, day for day. Needless to say I voted for them this morning, and I am a card-carrying member also).

PVV - needless to write about this mental institution\

SGP - fundamentalist Christians, though not in the American sense, thank God - simply strict, and predictable.

CU - Christian Union: like SGP, only a bit more worldly.

PvDD - ha! Our own Party for the Animals. Led by two charming ladies, one vegetarian, one vegan (as far as I know). They are there for, indeed, the animals. They try to fight the excesses of industrial farming of pigs, cows, chickens, of pharmaceutical use of animals, cosmetics-related abuse, and so on. For the rest they can be placed on the left side of the spectrum.

I guess I named the significant parties by now. The rest is not interesting.

Oh, and though clubs like SGP and CU usually only get a few seats, they are still important in terms of getting majorities, and in highly ethical issues; moreover, especially the SGP has historical standing and clout, they're not to be fooled with; they are known for there great and deep general knowledge on all things politically juridical and legal.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

And thank you for your reply -

in two hours from now the polls will close. 9 PM CET, and anyone in a queue can still vote until about 15 mins. later, IIRC.

I think at around 11 PM estimates with some significance will be made public.

I think the only thing Trump cares about is his ego. The only reason he wanted to be the president is because he wanted to be THE PRESIDENT.

He's got no ideological aims, no policies of his own, no real axes to grind apart from with people who he sees as insulting him. He told people what they wanted to hear. I don't think he believes a word that comes out of his own mouth. He's a carny man, a huckster.

I think that's it exactly.

I recently found out I've got TWO mates who support Trump. They're good friends, too. They don't talk about him in anything other than general terms, but it surprised me.

You predict well. 16 seats:

Edit: the Guardian jumped the gun. 14 seats. Ooops.

Thanks, Maarten, for your trust -

I must say I didn't delve into their operations so far.

DENK, which translates as: 'Think!) is a political party, founded by two dissenters in the Dutch 'labour' party PvdA (which is strictly third way, neoliberal), Tunahan Kuzu and Selçuk Öztürk. They left the PvdA in November of 2014.

They already presented themselves as an autonomous group within parliament from then on, which earned them the label: 'zetelrovers', meaning: seat robbers.

They eventually were joined by former Miss Holland Tatjana Maul, Moroccan representative Farid Azarkan, and TV-personality/presenter/celebrity Sylvana Simons.

But many eyebrows were raised, when it became obvious that the two founders of DENK prohibited miss Simons from saying anything about the genocide of the Armenian people by Turkey. Moreover: those guys worked slyly, but couldn't hide the now obvious fact that they support mr Erdogan, and thus the eventual turning of the Turkish democracy into a totalitarian state.

Ms Simons, by the way, left DENK, and founded her own party: 'Article One', which name is referring to the first statements of the Dutch constitution.

DENK got to three seats in yesterday's election.

I don't really think something like this has happened ever before: three members of Dutch parliament, in the possession of Dutch as well as Turkish passports, entitled to vote in both countries, and being overt supporters of a dictator in one of their 'fatherlands'.

(My own impression: I guess that the DENK-members are in full support of one of the dirty tactics of Erdogan: Turks in Europe are strongly 'advised' to spy on their countrymen, and to immediately make it known to Turkish authorities if someone displays 'Un-Turkish' activities in Holland, Germany, UK, other.)

And you're right. If he did have any clout over real politics, that's definitely gone now.

His campaign already was that of a desperate man. Now he does have 20 seats, but that doesn't mean anything anymore - no one essentially wants to govern together with him; and he's not needed to form the new government.

Plus: our traditional parties certainly will be happy with, and encouraged by all the international praise heaped on what the Dutch voters decided upon. No one would want to get their hands dirty by collaborating with Wilders now.
