How Was Your Valentine's Day?

Postby The Great Defector » 15 Feb 2017, 12:21

Either boast how will you were treated or you treated your better half :D , or bemoan lack of effort from your better half  or that you did fuck all because you're single. :D :(

I went out and had a cup of tea with my ma, and watched reruns of the chase.

We don't celebrate it but don't begrudge those who do. Like all festivals, their appropriation for commercial purposes just makes me a bit sick deep down. I think it is important to note that the commercialisation of festivals has been going on for centuries - it is certainly not a new thing.

It has its roots in the fertility festival of Lupercalia. Men would go around the Capitoline Hill hitting women with thongs made from goatskins in the belief that this would make them pregnant.

Luper...
Is that to do with wolves?
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

You obviously have the gift of the gab when you were hitting on women back in the day. ;)

We had a curry and watched the last few episodes from the first season of Better Call Saul.

We don't celebrate Valentines Day. Personally I think it's all a bit lame

Someone at work left a massive bowl full of Hershey's Kisses in the staff kitchen and I came close to making myself sick from eating so many of them, and then I picked up four lemon curd-filled cupcakes on my way home and we had a cup of tea, cooked a frozen pizza and ate cupcakes. I have a sugar hangover today.

Y'all can vomit, but for love I left behind my entire family, all my friends, 99% of my possessions, a career I loved, a great house and my country to be with my husband. I'm all about indulging the fuck out of a day where that sort of thing is given the thumbs up.

It was a strange day, because we got some very sad news, but at the same time, it seemed strangely fitting to be thinking of love and the circle of life as we thought about people that had gone. We both worked, then went out to a local bar for chips and salsa and tacos, picked up some cider and went home and watched Trouble in Paradise. I read a copy of 'The Dalesman' then we went to sleep with the cats on the bed.
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.

Blimey. We did this. What are the odds?

Also, we swapped cards. I love Valentine's Day, a love inherited from my dad who was a soppy old bastard. Phil also got a card addressed "to Dady, love from your secrete admirrors". We think it must be the cats.

We swapped cuddly gonks and enjoyed a super Chinese takeaway.

The kid has been studying ancient Greece in school so her entire day was filled with Greek related activities some of which I contributed to. When she was done with school I took her to an anti Valentine's Day party at the library for teenagers but she called me about a half hour in to that to tell me if she felt really sick, so I went back and picked her up.

It turned out she had a high fever so I spent most of the night stressed out about her. The spousal unit stopped at the drugstore for me to get cold medicine for the kid, and then since I was in Doctor Mom mode he stepped up and made us homemade burritos for dinner. It turned out we didn't need the cold medicine because we found out later that evening from the Actual Doctor that it was the flu...

Sometime after dinner Jeff gave us our Valentine's Day gifts -- she got a cute stuffed plush donut with beaded sprinkles on top and some See's candy. I am finally cleared for sex this Friday after my surgery in December, so my present was a box of See's strawberry truffles and a big bottle of lube. I got him anime porn. Aren't you sorry you asked now?

I bought the kids and my ex some valentine candy and gave it to them Monday night because I wouldn't see anyone but my son yesterday.

It's also Girl Scout cookie season so brought over some boxes I'd bought.

Good for you!

Personally, I think blaming commercialization is a cop-out for not celebrating the essence of a holiday. I don't really care if it's that manufactured or not if there's a true and honorable sentiment to a holiday.

Like Groundhog day or Arbor Day, for example.

The kids would have liked that. They were complaining there was insufficient root beer all day

I had to leave school twice to buy some.

It's not really a holiday though is it? I mean, it's not as if we actually get a day off or anything.

Personally, my relationship with my wife is not configured by some need to make a demonstration of love to each other on this one day of the year. Our thing is that neither of us feel the need to play along to this particular requirement that is reinforced by commercial organisations and by tradition. I've got no problem if that's what others do, it's just not what we do. What does Feb 14th mean to us personally? Nothing in the scheme of things. We have dates like our wedding anniversary and when we actually met that mean far more.

Yeah that's true for me too. We use it as a reminder to pay our taxes. And as an excuse to buy chocolate.

We had our "Virtual Valentine's Day" on Sunday - went to a vintage house/museum that had a display of old valentines, then went to dinner. The restaurants locally - yes, even in the quiet suburbs where we live - are all crazy overcrowded on the actual day, so we went home, exchanged cards (and chocolate!), cooked a frozen pizza and ate it, accompanied by wine and this movie, which was on TCM:
