Ex-Trump lawyer Cohen jailed for 36 months.
Imagine if he hadn't sang like a canary! Three years is a pretty long time for a rich white guy with a plea deal. No?

I thought it was kinda pathetic that he brought his kids to the sentencing, for what I can only assume was for leniency. Him guiding his injured daughter up to the courthouse was sad.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
That sounds pretty pathetic, but I bet he'll get out early.
I think they took all his money though. There was a pretty big forfeiture and penalties. He probably has some socked away off-shore, or his wife can write a book or something.
And he didn't really sing like a canary; he never became a cooperating witness because he would have had to spill the beans on EVERYTHING, including whatever he was up to with Russian mafia types who would have probably killed his family if he dimed them out.
I'd say he got off pretty light - although I don't really know much about criminal legal stuff.

As a general rule, there isn’t much in the way of parole in federal prison, so you basically are doing the time you’re assessed. I really don’t know whether he got off light or not—probably so in view of his expansively shady criminality. But 3 years in prison sucks no matter what.

Why didn't he think of that before, while he was deciding whether to do the crimes, if he even planned stuff out, I wonder.
Also:
His lawyers "painted Cohen as a victim that had 'the misfortune to be counsel to the president.'"
What a weird defense.

I think everything they did in court was focused on minimizing his moral culpability and persuading the judge to go easier on him.
Anyway, there’s this on the possible march toward the President being an unindicted co-conspirator:

Re: President Donald J. Trump
Trump's really painting himself into a corner on this hush money scandal. NY Mag looks at no less than seven different positions he's taken on it here: http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/12/ ... cence.html
Of course, the bulk of that is characterizations of what the president said, not actual defenses. But there's now evidence that corroborates Michael Cohen's avowal that his criminal acts were committed at Trump's behest in furtherance of political rather than personal ends.
And yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump's inaugural committee is now under criminal investigation. That business smelled funny from the get-go.
We were talking about Trump's siege mentality months ago; shit is off the charts now and shows no sign of letting up. At some point, he's just not going to have enough political capital to pay for Congress to look the other way.

It doesn't just get worse by the day, but by the hour. Congress wants to defund Saudi America now too.
I get why everyone is playing by the standard rules of law in ousting him, but a large part of me just wants to play by his rules and drag him out.
NY Ad exec, Donnie Deutsch, who traveled in the same social circles, made a comment that getting ousted from the Presidency is the least of his worries. He predicted that his whole business empire will go down. Every NY federal prosecutor is planting a bullseye on his businesses.

Well, never go into politics if you have something to hide, I guess, is the lesson here.

Re: President Donald J. Trump
Someone on twitter or wherever made the point that Nixon had spent decades working in the Republican Party, raising money for people, campaigning for people, governing with people, building bridges, making friends, all of that shit. Trump has no real ideological ties with the Republicans, no one owes him any favors, no one owes him any allegiance.
It’s a good point and I’ve always assumed that the great majority of Republicans in Congress hate his guts.
But the bottom line is they have to answer to his supporters in the primaries. At what point do they say, “fuck it” and burn him down. That’s all he has, but it’s no small thing.

True, but - and as Kath would say, it's a big butt - a lot of the more outrageous things the far right has tried to push through now seem a little bit less outrageous after two years of the head of state being a bull in a china shop. And that is what they get from each other - Trump gets the support of the 'mainstream' right and the 'mainstream' right can now pretend the wingnuts are the mainstream.
It's a terrifying prospect, but I think there's some truth in it. And if they can find a way to make it look like they're rebuking him while letting him help them erode every possible check or balance...
Suffice to say I think it's been the end game all along.

I heard an analogy about Trump and Nixon and Republicans the other day. Nixon was on top before Watergate, absolutely slaughtering McGovern. The commentator said, "Republicans were with Nixon and then they weren't.
Simplistic, but like you stated, Nixon had built up years forging relationships. I don't know how liked he was, though. He made his bones with McCarthy, but he was Ike's VP.

I think Nixon supporters were genuinely surprised that he was a crook. yeah, there's a denial that lasts even to this day but TRUMP supporters goddam KNEW he was a crook when they voted him in. Any that did NOT know have a lack of curiosity about it worthy of the man himself.
the Republican party has turned a dark corner. the news about what a straight up smear campaign it was about that Gillum guy, this crap going on in Wisconsin. I get that some seem to be ready to jump the ship - Hell you'd never know Rubio championed that idiot tax bill if you heard him talking today. they have their fingers in the wind but I still think they'd jump right the fuck back on that boat if a sudden turn of events made it look more seaworthy. Look at how they are trying to spin that Guatemala girl's death. they can say anything and stand by it. it's going to take a lot more Nancy Pelosis pointing out the Emeror's weenus for him not to insist things mean what he says they mean. I think the party is going to go with the flow.

Not that I'm an Orrin Hatch fan, but his comments upon retiring and the state of the Senate were pretty damning. I head Claire McCaskill make virtually the same comments in a long interview the other day, too.
I don't know what kind of legacy for themselves and the party these folks are thinking they'll have.

I see all sorts of people saying stuff like this, and other variants on "history won't look back on you kindly", and all I can think is that these motherfuckers really don't give a shit about how they'll be viewed after they're gone.
