What's always bothered me is the assumption that if a person is on the "left" or "right", they must have a certain strictly defined set of beliefs. The problem there is that I've never seen any sort of internal consistency in the beliefs of either the left or the right.

Not a single working age demographic voted in the majority for the Conservatives at the last election.
The only age group that did, massively, were the OAPs

So you may as well say - people are socialists until they hit senility when they turn to the right.

It makes as much sense i.e. none.

It is a truism that has no real basis in fact used by people who have become more selfish with age to try and justify their moral failings to their fellow man to themselves.

If we are bandying around aphorisms, I think yours was attributed to De Gaul amongst many others, probably Churchill as well, the Oscar Wilde of politics:

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."

Thinking you can get the best for your children by stamping down on other children through entrenching inequality of opportunity is a pretty Conservative principle though.

Why does everything always come back to class and politics with you lot? A "do you care about BCB" thread becomes "Conservatives vs Labour". Sheesh.

Do you think that the NHS has become such a politically weaponised thing that many politicians are now terrified of even discussing changing it (however that might take place), for fear of the backlash that would likely follow?

Surely that is because the change the right envisage is privatization in order that private profit can be made from ill health, and that is so deeply unpopular that they have had to do this by stealth.

Hmmmm. In a generous mood I might be able to give you some partial marks for your answers. For example, "twat" might be an uncharitable assessment of Mark Twain but who knows, there might be a grain of truth to your description. Therefore I'm willing to give you 15% overall.
