Cat or Dog?

Postby Footy » 29 Jul 2013, 17:06

Do you prefer cats or dogs?

I'm not really in a position to own a pet just now but if I could have either it would be a dog. Daft sods most of them.

I don't hate cats but their general self confidence and independence disarms me a bit.

I like 'em both. Dogs require more 'upkeep' than cats, but I think the rewards are greater.

Cat. A more graceful and beautiful animal I know not of.

Yeah. Cats seem a bit stand-offish at times whilst doggies are more needy. They're more fun to play with though and walking the dog is more fun than walking the cat.

I like all animals, really. I've yet to meet an animal I didn't like, although ornamental fish don't move me. However, it's clear that cats are the tits and that kittens are the greatest things ever.

But they're a bit snooty aren't they? I get local cats in my yard, try to coax them and they just stare at me and then leap over the wall and clear off.
Dogs on the pavement out front, however, respond by wanting to be stroked and made a fuss of.

Yes, you're right, but get a cat as a pet and pamper it, and it'll lay on your stomach and purr while you are reading. Good feeling.

That would be another problem with having a cat - not knowing which feathered friend or furry rodent it might bring home next - all mangled and dead.

I like both, but prefer cats. They're just more interesting to observe and I like their eccentricity.

I've heard that before and I really don't get it. I find cats boring and snooty. Dogs are much more fun to watch, to be around.

I like both too. But dogs are too much work, at the moment anyway. And I'd hate to be tied down to walking one twice a day. I'd like to get one at some stage though.

My cat is the most adorable, affectionate creature you could want. He's never displayed an ounce of snootiness or aggression or temper ever. Neither has he brought any kind of dead/mauled animal to the door or garden. He'll snuggle up and purr and it's really lovely.

It's tempting and sweet to impose human behaviours and emotions onto animals, but it's much more complex than describing cats as 'snooty' and dogs as 'friendly'. As pack animals, dogs HAVE to get on with their leaders (humans) or they are FUCKED. Cats hunt alone and like privacy. Cats that are socialised and exposed to humans constantly from an early age will adapt really well and be friendly and approachable their whole lives because they recognise humans as part of their 'clan'. the younger you get them, the more human - friendly and less 'snooty' they will be. I've looked after hundreds of kittens at the kitten shelter from one day old onwards. Every single one has been friendly and attentive because of the level of exposure they get to loving human hands from an early age.

Dogs

Cats are just clever parasites

Neotony has turned them into permanent kittens, they flick the same switches as meercats

We have an almost symbiotic relationship with dogs we co-evolved with them for so long

Mrs Copehead always says it should feel weird having another species of animal living with you in your house as part of the family but it doesn't, probably because we have been doing it for 10s of thousands of years with dogs

I still think people should have to pass some sort of test to own a dog though, some of the stupid cunts you see with dangerously out of control dogs really get my goat.

Cats are OK, I don't mind them. I wouldn't have one as a pet through choice, though if Cat wants to get one in future I'm fine with that.

What does really get on my wick is the way people go on about them. And the way some cat owners try to disclaim responsibility for them defecating in other peoples' gardens. It's as bad as dog owners who let their pets crap in the street and don't clear up after them. But that's a whole other kettle of fish.

I agree, some people do yack on about them ad nauseam.

And yes, cat poo isn't nice to stumble across in respect of the toxoplasmosis parasite that may be present. I come across it frequently when working in gardens with areas of pea shingle which sometimes seem to be one big kitty litter tray. But I don't think you can realistically blame the cat owners as that's the nature of their beasts.

Anyway, not a yack but let me briefly introduce you to my old dog, Boris

Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.
