Fredric Wertham "played fast and loose" with data in 1954
As some of you may know, psychiatrist Fredric Wertham crusaded against the immorality of comic books in 1954, leading to public hearings held by the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency, which effectively neutered the more extreme titles, and brought about the self-imposed Comics Code Authority by the industry: http://news.illinois.edu/news/13/0211co ... illey.html

Great article, Goog
Good insights into Coan's character
I am sure he's no stranger to fudging

It's kinda depressing for a music forum to be proud of not knowing musicians.

Comics (but not newspaper strips) published before the imposition of the Comics Code in 1954, effectively means comics from 1934 to 1954. This censorship would continue for more than fifty years, and the underground comics of the late 60s and the 70s were a result thereof.

Ah ok, so that where's Robert Crumb comes in I guess?
Did I tell you that I had lunch with Crumb once? He lives in Sauve in France and a friend of a friend rents a flat in his house.

Wow! Lucky man, I've always wanted to meet him. He rarely makes convention appearances.

Indeed. What was he like. Very quiet and unassuming I would bet.
Oh boy is it getting rough, when my old world charm isn't quite enough.

What an asshole!
To me, comics are about mayhem, monsters and sexy women.
I'll take The Vault of Horror; you can keep Richie Rich.

Ever since EC stopped publishing Vault of Horror, kids can no longer experience vaults of horror vicariously. As a result, swarms of thrill seeking kids are getting badly hurt, dismembered, killed in their local vaults of horror. Sad, really.

isn't that down to the "Jackass" show more than anything, though?
