They say things come in 3s so I reckon this Saturday someone else from BCB will win.

Actually no, it's one of Adele's spare frocks I bought off eBay. Shocking colour too.

Well, like Martha, for as much as my wife and I make, there is always another new bill that we're trying to get out from under or trying to stay ahead of. Between my wife and I, we make a solidly middle class income.

If we lived in another area of the U.S., our income might be upper middle class, but we live in one of the most expensive areas of the U.S., if not the most expensive, and even though the housing crisis crippled many, we bought at the right time and ours is still worth twice what we paid for it. That said, we recently refinanced for a 15-year mortgage because of the great rates but are getting a little more on the loan than our house value to pay off credit cards that built up when I was out of work two years ago.

I'm thinking now that the house will have no investment or inheritance value for the kids but we'll use it in a reverse mortgage to help us live on because our retirement savings won't make it.

Through sheer dumb luck, my dad's house and land is probably worth close to $2 million. But, I'm not counting on splitting that with my brother because the most likely scenario is we will have to spend it on my dad's assisted living or convalescent care when he needs it, which will not be far off.

I won £50 back in the '90s when it started, but it's a tax on stupidity isn't it :? :(

Well below the poverty level here but at least I have a contract now which would cover most medical if Duncan or I fell out of a tree and broke a hip. We've been living without a contract for the last 6 years give or take a month here or there with jobs that I've had here in Spain, knock wood, so far so good with anything we've had being minor and payable to the hospital in cash.

We rent, we have internet for the first time in years, someone gave us a car and a big satelite dish and the houses we've rented have always allowed us to have a garden, which we can use most of the year, so we are lucky. And we know that, lucky in that I've had work when alot of friends haven't, lucky that the few remaining nice posessions that I have, I haven't had to sell yet because some wok has always come at the right time, lucky in that Duncan and I rarely get sick and so far my weird ailments haven't been bad enough for me to even think about going into a doctors office for treatment.

I remember the days when I was rich, and Duncan seems intriqued when I tell him stories about how my allowance worked, I could drop 200 dollars a day (keep in mind that 200 dollars in the 80's and 90's was fairly big money) on anything, clothes, groceries, sex toys, craft supplies, pet toys, whatever. Anything over 200 and my husband and I had agreed to discuss purchases, for things like cars and dishwashers, the only other item I could buy no questions asked was for my ex's birthday or Xmas presents. I could pay whatever I wanted and did, actually for him the more expensive the better the gift, so he got things like Fender Strats and flying lessons. He and I were'nt the richest people that we knew but to be a millionaire on paper at 25 to 35 years old, it's not a bad way to live.

No.

And even though I'm grateful for the basics, and a few luxuries every once and a while, I'm finding it hard to keep my momentum financially. I bought a car using a line of credit last year, and have not put a dent in the debt. I would like to move to a larger place so that my daughter can have a room of her own when she visits, but I'm not sure when that's going to happen.

Worrying about money sucks.

A down and out minor character in Bleak House says "I have been keeping out of the way and living cheap down about the market-gardens, but what's the use of living cheap when you have got no money? You might as well live dear."

If I could only get my wife to work again then we'd be all right. Working to feed four mouths can be a drag.

Just happy not to be a burden on my folks at the moment. I have no investments and no dependents, so I probably have more disposable cash than others who make more than I do.

These threads are depressing.

Was doing great a year ago with me set to retire but my wife was laid off and our grown son moved home so now I need to keep on working and spending less to keep the SS Jimbo afloat. .
