Re: old cigarette packets
Never smoked a fag in my life, but I agree that the packaging was superb. The leery kids at school smoked dunhill, because they thought it made them look rich and prosperous.
my grand dad smoked these all his life, and died of emphysema
My dad smoked a pipe until his 40th birthday. Tins of this stuff all over the house...

Re: old cigarette packets
I suppose the brilliance was making something that can be mass-produced cheaply look exclusive. Dark reds, golds, classic and subdued typography...

Re: old cigarette packets
There was a billboard poster campaign for Old Holborn in the 80s.
The photograph on the poster was something like a bloke in the London Underground tilling a mosaic of the Old Holborn logo.
Every couple of weeks they changed the image on the billboards so he was gradually completing the job.
You didn't actually know what it was advertising until the near the end but you got the shapes and the colours.
Pretty clever actually.

The OASIS double cd gold boxset looks like it was designed from the Benson and Hedges box......
How would you like to be remembered? Oh I don't know. I suppose if we are remembered as a great little rock and roll band it would be fine.........

I voted Players No. 6, my Mum's fag of choice until she had a heart attack in her 30s

She had been on to the Silk Cut for some time when that happened.
You'll all be pleased to hear our mum is in her 70s and fit as a fiddle now!
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Not surprisingly, this brand failed to take off in the UK.

My mum used to send me to the shop to get her Number 6.
'Ten number 6' I would say and reach up and put the pennies on the counter.
I was 9!

I was running a similar errand for my older sister.
The owner of the shop apparently(*) used to sell cigarettes singly to the kids from the nearby secondary school.
