My little dude has been circumcised. It is standard practice in the US (where my wife is from) and I am circumcised, so it doesn't seem odd to me.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

If there's a valid medical reason for it - fair enough.

Maiming children in the name of religion - bad news.

If there was a god, and he/she wanted children to be circumcised, wouldn't he/she arrange for kids to be born that way?

If grown men want to indulge in this odd and unnecessary practice then that's up to them...but it's pretty fucking barbaric doing it to children.

I have never regarded myself as maimed, or blamed my parents for it. Little dude may feel differently, of course.

My dad was circumcised. I'm not. I never found out if it was medical. My dad's 2 brothers are still alive, I might ask them.

I know the argument runs that circumcision is 'cleaner'
I don't have children but if I did, teaching them how to wash themselves might prove less drastic than chopping half their cocks off.

What next, behead them so they don't get dandruff?

I blame the jews.

Yep - I only found out about that a few years' ago.

Yeah, the American thing is weird. My mate, who's got an extra long foreskin (his ex called it the 'anteater') has slept with a couple of American women and said they were fascinated by it. 'Hypnotised' he said although that's probably going a bit too far. The hygiene argument may be applicable in certain parts of the world but not in the developed west. It's barbaric really.

I'm not, which is unusual for U.S. males of my generation (and now, I guess), and about which I felt stigmatized as a child.

One of the reasons I'm really glad we had a girl is that Mrs. SG and her family are Jewish and it would have been a knock-down, drag-out fight because I would have had to insist that my son not be circumcized, religious tradition be damned. The Mrs. could go either way, but the family, while not actually observant, is into tradition.

Fair enough, but not when it comes to genital mutilation of MY offspring!

You were stigmatised rather than circumcised? Seems preferable.

It's cavaliers vs. roundheads. In principle, I'm against it, but in the case of too tight foreskin, a little snip will be necessary.

Indeed. I remember watching an episode of Nip/Tuck many years ago where some kid who was essentially my age asked his dad to get him a circumcision "for the ladies". I'd never in my life even thought about it - I just presumed it was another utterly fucked up religious practice and had no clue there was actually any other reason to have circumcision. Briefly I felt a bit self-conscious about it but then it made me even more angry - I can vaguely understand it in a religious context because these people have a moral compass that I can't even begin to comprehend...but taken out of that context, i have absolutely no sympathy whatsoever - it is utter brutality. At around the same time I was working at Amnesty International where there was a campaign against genital mutilation. This is of course centred around women/girls - as it should be - but when I posed the question, which at the time was based on ignorance/innocence, as to whether circumcision is also a form of genital mutilation, i was met with a very awkward silence. I was quite surprised, but i find the whole thing reprehensible, fully support the German court's decision and wish that this entirely outdated practice was outlawed - I'm amazed that doctors are willing to participate in something that has no medical rationale whatsoever. An affront on Jewish/Muslim identity? Fuck right off.

I was done at 6 for medical reasons - I believe the foreskin was too tight. There are apparently alternatives nowadays for this circumstance, including a vertical snip to loosen it. I think circumcision is regarded as option of last resort.

I cannot support this sort of thing being done for religious reasons - what if some loony cult insisted on their right to amputate the left hand of believers because that's the devil's side?

There are few medical reasons. Sometimes the foreskin is too tight and causes discomfort (and ballooning when you urinate) for instance. I also knew one fellow who was supposedly advised to have it done after his foreskin had become scarred from STDs.

It is apocryphally supposed to improve sex for your partner, due to the glans being less sensitive (so on average it takes longer for a circumcised male to reach climax). Perhaps this would be a question for the ladies of the board? ;)

I've two sons, the younger was circumsized for the above reason.

If not for that purely medical reason to ensure he wasn't experiencing any discomfort we'd never have even considered it.

It's not bullshit, but it's close to it - there are alot of conflicting data on this subject (and I see alot of the data whenever it comes about as i work with doctors and health managers alot). There is a strong movement to retroactively seek to justify this practice in a medical context, even if the origins of circumcision have nothing to do with physical health - it was a strictly religious practice as an apparent commandment from God.

But yes, of course there are several critical medical circumstances in which circumcision is not just recommended, it is almost essential - and I have no problem with that. But that accounts for maybe 5% of all circumcisions.

Sorry but to me it's like parents who refuse to vaccinate their children - it is irresponsible and puts your child at completely unnecessary risks when it is at its most vulnerable.
