Dawson is not in the same league as the others, who are all immensely witty. I am not really sure Howerd could live with Dodd. Good to see you include the wonderful Larry Grayson. Very underrated in my opinion.

I love Les Dawson. Grayson isn't fit to lace the others boots. Dodd is arguably the funniest.

Frankie Howerd was the funniest by far, to me. Aside from all the famous ooh-ing and aah-ing, you never knew what he was going to say. He was a nervous wreck, too.

Les Dawson was old hat even in the 70s - mother-in-law jokes and bad piano playing do not make great comedy. Ken Dodd didn't break any new ground either, but there was a lunatic edge that made him special. Larry Grayson was a lovely man and it came across - sometimes that counts.

How the fuck did Larry Grayson sustain a career? The only "comedian" less funny was probably Harry Worth.

Ken Dodd by a country mile. He's made more punters miss the last bus than a reformed Beatles would.
No Billy Connolly mind.

I saw Larry Grayson live back in the 70s, hosting a variety bill at the Palladium.
He was excellent. Funny man. Shame he relied so much on the 'what a gay day' schtick because there was more to him than that.

Les Dawson..meh.
He could make me laugh but it was always hackneyed, even back in the 70s.
I did like the two old dears thing he did with Roy Barraclough though.

I never warmed to Ken Dodd. Just his style.
Never appealed, and if you don't warm in some way to a comedian you are not going to be on side with them enough to find them funny.

Frankie Howerd was brilliant.
Off the wall and manic.
He beats Larry by a nose.

I only ever saw Larry Grayson in The Generation Game. Likeable but not particularly funny.

Les Dawson never appealed much. He could be funny but often I thought he was just silly. And not in a good way.

I saw Ken Dodd live al looooong time ago and he was amazing. So much energy and his shows overran by quite a bit but it didn't drag at all. However, I could never stomach watching him after I found out he was an arch Tory. I hate rich people who moan about their taxes. I've always disliked George Harrison for the same reasons.

I think Frankie Howerd was brilliant. He's part of that tradition of loveable misanthropes like Tony Hancock that I dearly love. Like Tommy Cooper, iti didn't matter if his material wasn't always funny because he was funny.

Wins by a mile for me.

That pretty much sums it up for me. I think his comedy came over better on radio than TV. I'd put Peter Sellars and the likes of Kenneth Connor and Sid James in there too.

At his best, Howerd was very funny indeed, but he really did have have that undercurrent of woe in nearly everything he did. You were always aware that he was a deeply unhappy man. Dodd is just a comedy machine. You just turn him on, and he can go on and on for hours with no prompting. Very hard to chose between these two, but I would still go and see Grayson over either.

Frankie Howerd was quite brilliant - a cut above the others here.

I'm going to see Billy Connolly in about 5 weeks time, at the Mayflower in Southampton. Now THAT will be very, very special.

The only one I really like is Howerd. His humour was a bit more off the wall than the others and translated better to a modern sensibility. The others were the kind of the end of the pier stuff that dominated light entertainment television in the 70's and 80's. Like most young people then I couldn't relate to any of it. Grayson was fine as the host of The Generation Game though.

Doddy

Like the fact that his shows regularly over run ... Wouldn't mind seeing him live sometime

In the spirit of skewing the results of polls i have no real opinion on, for no reason whatsoever - Les Dawson.

I voted for Les but it's a pretty poor bunch all round. They're all so ENGLISH in their humour.*

And Ken Dodd is just downright creepy. Ew.

*I mean by that, that their humour is a very English form. Of all of them, Dawson relied slightly more on the universal humour of dressing badly as a woman and playing the piano. For the rest of them, their humour didn't translate here too well and I can't imagine anyone else in the world finding any of them funny at all.
