My gross pay looks impressive but my monthly income tax deduction is US$2800 (and then there's National Insurance and Pension contributions on top of that).

Not looking for sympathy. :) Just giving Jimbo the context re. European salaries and the gulf between gross and net figures. On my payslip I see that deductions amount to 41% of the gross.

I'm taxed about 25% of my earnings each month, I expect it'll be closer to 40% when I move later in the year, this will no doubt come as quite the shock.

Annually, it appears I bring home a little more than Thesiger clears monthly.

Country, UK (Oxford) to US (New York (city)), pay increase too but I'm sure I'll wince when I first see the numbers (and I'm politically tax/spend inclined, it's just the jump will be a shock).

US federal tax rates are generally lower than in the UK, but in New York there may be state income tax to consider.

US federal rates 2011

10% on taxable income from $0 to $8,500, plus
15% on taxable income over $8,500 to $34,500, plus
25% on taxable income over $34,500 to $83,600, plus
28% on taxable income over $83,600 to $174,400, plus
33% on taxable income over $174,400 to $379,150, plus
35% on taxable income over $379,150.

About £2k per month after tax, which is pretty good I guess. Well, I think so.

About half that goes to my ex and the girls, and then just under half what remains goes to repaying loans and whatnot. So what I actually take home is around £550 per month to cover rent, food, bills and everything else.

That's why I'm flatsharing and haven't got a car. And I eat a lot of beans on toast :D

Yeah the federal tax rate doesn't seem too bad, it's just all the other taxes that seem to add up, state tax, city tax, medicare, etc

These are the kind of numbers I get back when I put them through one of those paycheckcity calculators

Federal Withholding 850
Social Security 280
Medicare 95
New York 380
NY SDI 2.6
City Tax 220

Psychologically, paying attention to the gross figure rather than the net figure will only make you miserable. I am not exactly sure what my monthly gross is (as I don't look at my pay slips unless I have to), but the (vast) net figure pops up in my bank account.

In the UK salaries etc tend to be negotiated on a gross basis. This doesn't make sense. Employees should really only be bothered about their net pay, and look on the rest as additional cost to the employer. Of course a change in rates will have an impact on the employee, but as a general modus operandi it makes sense to pay attention to the only figure that matters.

Blimey - check those state and city taxes!! The rest you can more or less equate to UK taxes.

You could go and live in the urban hell that is Dallas - Texas has no state income taxes.

Actually, having looked again I think my comment on what is a relatively modest salary was overly sarcastic, so appologies :)

As a freelance journalist my income varies depending on what work I can augment my modest core editing roles with... I just worked out my tax bill... You have to pay it as a lump sum, I'm not sure where I'm going to rustle up the bread from :(
