Musical Conundrum.... (ex-band politics)

Postby 12stringbassist » 19 Sep 2011, 23:35

I was recently in this band and there were lots of problems. You think I'm fond of posting
photos of me with a bass? Well the singer out of that lot takes the soggy biscuit. Facebook and
all the north west music sites are full of his awful semi-erect blues doodlings that all sound
the same. It's all about him and everyone else is a sideman and when he's drunk, the criticism
flows like a never-ending stream of tramp's piss. He's always pissed on a gig night.

The band went through a lot of issues this year and I parted company with them after a
really disasterous gig in Blackpool. It really was a shambles and I shouted at the singer
outside the pub and there was no going back from it. I went in the back of the van on the way
home, stuck my ipod on and sadly missed the sound of guitarist loudly threatening to stop the
van and paste him all over the M6.

A couple of months down the road, they've got their old bassist back in and the singer is crowing
about how he's the best blues player they've ever had. I don't particularly mind that, you gotta
publicise yourself. I've asked him to remove all youtube footage with me on it and any photos
that I'm on, as I won't trade on having played with them (!) and he'd better not trade on my old
performances with them either. I'm doing my best to disassociate from them completely. He is a bit
of a laughing stock. http://www.nighttrain.org.uk sums it up (my work - I'm so ashamed).

The guitarist left to come with me, quite amicably, once a replacement was found.

But.... the singer's latest wheeze is to register on a NW music forum as my new band and post
a glowing review of his lot. I'm not impressed.

I have written a carefully worded post distancing us from his fake review and sent a message to
the admin of the forum, asking for the pseudo account to be removed. It breaks the law to
impersonate someone else like that. I do have some sense of humour left, but that nearly stopped
my band from registering on a site which is the source of a lot of work for us.

The world was holding its breath waiting for me to post that, obviously......

Sounds like you're doing the right thing, distancing yourself from him. I assume the thing with the music forum will turn out. Doesn't sound like much more you need to do. Band politics is a pain in the ass.

Kick his balls and keep kicking 'til you break a toe. Knobheads like that, give singers and musicians a bad name, they also prey on musicians with self esteem issues in an effort to bolster their own sagging self image.

Funny - but if that is your work then I wouldn't be surprised if he has a go at you over it.

This is the right thing to do. Keep your cool and stick to your guns. Also, you may wish to let other venues, musicians and bands you cross paths know about this guy. Don't be full-on, frothing at the mouth about it, more a polite "hey, if you ever meet a guy called "X" avoid him at all costs".
