I phoned a counsellor and now it seems like I need another visit to my GP. Don’t worry as it’s not a bad thing. If what I think is true, things will make more sense and that phone call was productive. Don’t want to say too much here as I can’t be sure yet, but I will post more soon.

Last night, my son wanted me to sign some form from school. I knew something was up because he had his hand over most of it. I asked him what it was and he said it was a permission slip for a field trip. I didn't really buy it, but signed it anyway because I didn't want to argue about it.

The little dummy left the form out near his backpack and I saw it was for detention because he and a friend had been goofing off and upended bowls of salad and a garbage can in the cafeteria.

As I was about to leave for work, I asked him, "You gonna go with that permission slip story?"

He knew he was busted and I said, "I know you didn't tell me because you didn't know if I was going to be mad or not, but little things like that don't bug me. You were goofing off, you got busted, you're doing detention. I'm not going to mention it to mom."

I said my goodbyes and left for work.

The mayor of our nearest town, Crediton, one Frank Letch, is a Londoner about my age who was born without arms, writes with his feet and other admirable adaptations to his disability. He is an OBE, and, despite being a Lib Dem, generally well-respected.
Today, in the fortnightly Farmer's Market, after what was perhaps our eighth interaction in as many years*, I told the importunate, condescending and patronising cunt to fuck off, in as many words.

I don't know what impression people might have formed from my posting style, but I can assure you that in real life, I tend to avoid all public confrontations, and using swear words, especially in anger, when around the public in general, including children and little old ladies. This was three hours ago, and I'm still seething and upset: it might well ruin my weekend.

* the first three all involved him interrupting separate conversations I was having with a stallholder, literally stepping in front of me and starting talking to them. The other five all had to do with his insistence of handing out poo-bags to anyone he sees in the market with a dog (I always carry poo-bags, always clean up after Scrap), no matter how politely they point out how it really is unnecessary and his continued insistence is not only condescending and patronising but also likely to lead a breach of the peace.

Yesterday, I read an article by a friend of a friend and sent an email to mine to tell him and ask him how he was doing.

Almost a year ago, we met for lunch and he cried, telling me how his daughter and wife were emotionally abandoning him. My friend is a very talented writer, but he can be kinda rigid and stubborn. I kinda beat around the bush and told him he might have to be more open to change, and I'd been there when my marriage was falling apart.

He emailed me back and told me things are worse and basically told me he's contemplating suicide.

I emailed him back and told him how I made it back from my marriage ending, losing a job and having to take care of my dad. I made it about small victories. I had some very dark times, but I knew there was a light at the end of a very long tunnel. There had to be.

I also reiterated that he has to be less stubborn and didn't beat around the bush this time. I feel he wouldn't have emailed me if he wanted to really kill himself, deep down, and needs someone to lean on and words of hope. I hope I gave some to him.

There was more to my message than that to him, but that was kinda a summary. I'm calling a mutual friend, who's had depression problems, to get his insight.

My godson and nephew, Justin, played in a high school playoff game this weekend and won in overtime, 31-30, in one of the best leagues in the Bay Area. He had 8 tackles, second on the team. Tom Brady and Lynn Swann came out of this league, just to name two.
