I sent Harvey a PM about why I haven't been on here in a month in case he thought it was about him. It really wasn't. While I wasn't crazy about his response on the school shooting thread, I wrote what I wrote in response, but I don't carry grudges - too much work.

I've had a relative, a close relative, go into rehab for alcoholism, and the degree to which it had consumed him was pretty surprising to everyone. The rubber finally hit the road, as they say, and his physical condition pretty much forced him into rehab. That was the same time as when I left so it looked like I might have left for one reason, when it was really another completely different reason. Sorta.

My cousin's so bad that they had to take him out of rehab this week and put him in the hospital again. He's four years older than me, but looks 20 years older now. I won't go into the gory details, but I've been making the two hour drive up to Napa each weekend and two hours back for the last month and something had to give - and that was BCB.

His sister is coming out this weekend from New Jersey, where they grew up, and as I texted her yesterday after conversations with his doctor and nurse, it could be the last time she sees him alive. He's that bad. I also wanted to prepare her for his physical condition when she saw him.

He's my oldest cousin and I looked up to him when I was much younger. We have a small immediate family - me, my brother and my three cousins, so we're all pretty close. My mom and her sister married my dad and his lifelong best friend in a double wedding long ago so it's pretty tight.

I didn't want anyone on here to bear any emotional fallout or be collateral damage to how I was feeling, and felt it was getting that way when I responded to Harv, so I backed off.

I'm not promising anything, especially when random goofballs pick the Waterboys over September Gurls, but I'll try to restrain myself.

We all got our shit, huh?

B got accepted into the writers' workshop at the Banff Art Centre in Alberta which means she's going to be gone for FIVE WEEKS starting at the end of April. I guess it's gonna be just me and the pooch, living it up bachelor style.

The pooch couldn't get her to take it as well?

You mean she could take the pooch along with her as well? Naw, I'll be happy for the company, and anyway that dog's just crazy enough that it would probably think that getting into a fight with a bear would be a good idea.

Tell her congrats for me. I hope she gets what she wants out of it. Either way you have five weeks to run wild with the dog(s).

I still remember that photo you posted of the two of you in NYC with him in his Yankee cap.

Last night with the extended sunlight, my son and his buddy who lives on our apt complex decided to bike to the hardware store to get a laser pointer at around 7pm.

They didn't lock the bikes up in the bike racks near the front of the store, but decided to park and lock them in an unlit, unpopulated area away from the store. Hence, my $700 bike was stolen after they bought the $2 laser pointer.

I was not very happy when I learned of their exploits.

My son always asks me when I ask him what he thinks are obvious questions, "Do you think I'm stupid?"

This morning, I said, "You know when you ask me, 'Do you think I'm stupid?'" He didn't say anything.

I said, "Here's where it applies as a 'yes.'"

I got a text fairly late last night from my cousin's rehab center where's he's going back to after the hospital.

It's official - he has cirrhosis of the liver and can never drink again. If he does, he'll need a transplant and has to stay dry at least six mos before they'll even consider him for a liver.

I've known folks who are waiting for liver transplants. They're not easy to get and it can take awhile to get one.

Not so fast, I guess. My cousin is back in the hospital because he had increased levels of ammonia enzymes.

I recently had my 2-yearly health check, nothing nasty found I'm pleased to say. After the cardiovascular tests I was told that I'm as fit as the average 25-29 year-old (I'm 52), which really pleased me until I got to wondering just how unfit the average 25-29 year old probably is these days.

There was a time in the 1970s and early 1980s (before I met her) that Chip's mother and step-father lived in a long house on the Isle of Harris. Chip was fond of quoting the locals, in that peculiarly lilting and musical Hebridean accent: on such was, 'Och the lambs are dancing', referring to the spring-heeled frolics of very young lambs. I've seen it many times, but this is the first quarter-decent fist I've made of recording, although having Scrap yanking at the lead in my other hand, it's not as smooth as I would have liked...
