Wow, that’s awful. Never heard of a downburst before.

Talking of downbursts, at the weekend I went to our downstairs loo, leaned back in a nice relaxed pose, at which point the cistern collapsed and smashed, pouring water all over me, the floor, the cats, the garage.

I’ve learned my lesson which is- don’t relax in the loo!

I was staying with some friends when I learned that lesson. Thankfully I didn't actually break the tank, but water was leaking out of it onto the floor and I was so tired at the time that it took me a while to notice. Embarrassing.

On Saturday we had a brief but intense squall, with some crazy lightning. I was at work at the time, and when I got home I found that an enormous tree had fallen onto my house, blocking my front door, shearing off half my rain gutter, and at least denting part of my roof. At least, that's what I could see from the outside. I made my way to the back door (which I hadn't used in years - I wasn't even sure I had a key for it, but luckily it was the same as the front door lock), got in, went upstairs and found the tree was INSIDE my living room. It had come through the ceiling right over a recliner chair where I sometimes sleep. I was grateful I hadn't been in it at the time; I don't think the tree would have hit me, but I might have had a heart attack if I'd been awakened by that!

I called my insurance immediately, and they assured me that people would be out to remove the tree and tarp the ceiling within four hours, and that they'd call within one hour to tell me when they were coming; plus they were setting me up in a nice hotel. None of that happened that night, except that someone texted me at 11:15 to say that the tree removal people would be there sometime between 9 and 11 am. I don't know how they could have done it in the dark anyway - we're talking a MAJOR job - but I couldn't see going to my nice hotel, because there was a fucking great HOLE in my roof and what if a squirrel or bird or something came in? (Don't know what I would have done if they had, but at least I'd have known about it. Maybe.) (No small animals got in, but loads of insects did.)

So basically the tree started getting removed around 4:30 pm yesterday and I think it took them about an hour and a half; I had been told earlier that the same crew would tarp the roof, but THAT didn't happen. I ended up calling someone local that I knew who came right out and covered the big hole 'cause I didn't know when or if the guys who had actually been contracted to do it would do it. THEY ended up coming sometime after 10, by which time I was ensconced in my hotel, preparing to get some sleep for a change.

I went back to the house today to move some vinyl records and whatnot downstairs, and gather stuff I needed to take to my hotel, and a different crew was there to tear out bits of the ceiling and walls. The tree removers had managed to knock my AC out of commission, so we were all having a SWELL time.

This ain't much compared to what folks like kath and C have been through lately, but STILL.

Having spent some time around tumbling trees recently I know that’s no fun! My god. Hope it all gets sorted and soon!

Holy crap Charlie. That all really sucks. I hope everything gets resolved swiftly.

I also hope the tree spared the cistern? ;)

This morning I drove past an encampment on the local Common at a 3 road and pedestrian crossing junction, about 300 metres from Sadiq Khan's home, (including portaloos, tents and pavilions) plus a self-described “Anti-ULEZ Convoy” on the road. There's a caravan which the Police can't remove as it's someone's property and has wheels but produces no emissions so no breach of ULEZ. It's just been towed there and left.
It's all been getting quite aggressive with fascist depictions, slogans and caricatures of Khan, "Poisonous Air is a Lie" posters and banners and plenty of abusive yelling, shouting and arguing.

Newsflash : They're bedding in for the night, setting up powerful spot lights. There's a Police van there observing but taking no (obvious) action but also numerous cars and vans beeping in support...
...beer and barbecues most of the night, early morning 6.30 wake-up call for homes opposite and threats to "bring the travellers in next" to set up camp.
They say this is the first of several planned demos on that spot. The next one is next weekend.

Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

This morning I went swimming in a pool that I used to go to as a kid. I hadn't been for 43 years! I was there at 7:30am, and was sort of reassured that the early morning swimming crowd always looks the same. Alas, only the middle pool was open- the diving pool that I used to love taking running jumps from was sealed off. I was also pleasantly surprised that I wasn't a candidate for the slow lane- I had to go to the middle one. Get me!

The key fobs to the lockers are all now electronic, no more enormous safety pins holding your key in place. And those bastards had taken down the iconic "things not to do" in the pool sign that included no petting, no bombing, no smoking- no doubt it featured stereotypes not acceptable in this day and age. To my horror, there is no cafe there any more. I was really looking forward to sitting with half-dry hair and eating beans on toast while watching everyone else still in the pool. What replaced this nostalgic culinary experience? Bags of Doritos from a vending machine. Big fat bollocks.

Non tomato based with chicken and corn. I would call it thick soup but the recipe world pigeon holes it. Uses a lot of the same spices. Despite the crazy misnomer it is quite delicious.

Lovely pic, M'lord. Such a proud day. The only disappointment for us when our son graduated from Edinburgh was that a graduation cap was not a requirement. We were hoping for a scene from "Lucky Jim", graduation caps flying into the air and all we got was an overpriced photographer
