I visited a friend of mine for her 40th birthday yesterday. She's been in the hospital since July after being struck by a car door while cycling. She suffered a severe brain trauma, and is still undergoing intensive rehabilitation, and I doubt she'll ever fully recover. If you are a cyclist, please wear a helmet.

This is the same woman whose husband died from an accidental fentanyl overdose last winter.

Last night, on a whim, I've ordered two "beginner's sets" (2 X 24 bottles) of fizzy lemonade produced by small Berlin company Wostok.

My first online purchase where delivery costs as much as the actual product.... totalling close to 70 quid!

But I think Wostok is cool! :P 8-)

Our daughter is at the hospital with pneumonia. I'm trying to keep cool but I'm completely panicked and I feel culpable and powerless.
My wife and I are both scrambling around trying to get work stuff covered, too, and God knows if any kind of Thanksgiving holiday is going to happen this year, but at least the girl is being treated and she's going to get better now.
:(
Poor little girl. She doesn't deserve this.

It happens. Both our kids ended up there for pneumonia/childhood asthma. Kids bounce back quick.

I remember one time on a trip to the ER with my daughter who was about two and my wife holding her and barging through the ER registration line, yelling, "My baby, my baby's going to die."

I remember thinking I should buy an ER fast pass.

That baby is 22 now.

Thanks, everybody. I'm sure there's a goodly amount of "first kid syndrome" going on in our reaction, here, but shit is scary.
I just now got word that Isabella's being discharged today. We've got a pulmonologist appointment the start of next month, so hoping for the best.
Anyway thanks for the replies. I think I must have needed that.

Shouldn't they all be in your deleted folder?

I'm a bit OCD about a clean inbox or e mail account in general when it comes to work. The deleted folders gets emptied at every opportunity. Just hope I didn't win that employee of the year award and have to claim my prize within a certain amount of time.

Maybe they already gave you the award but you deleted the email letting you know.

Hello! Thought I'd check in after all this time. Count - hope your girl is doing better!

Since I have some downtime while I wait for my code to run, and for my email to be replied to, I decided to do a little bit of a writing exercise. And I could not think of a better place to do that than here!

What's new with me? Well, after being officially away from Singapore for approximately a decade, today I finally started the process of getting the contract for my new job starting next spring. It's been a rather confusing and delicate decision-making process, involving a massive pros and cons list with 6 voting parties, rejecting a highly competitive special fellowship I received to start my own research projects with my current bosses next spring, with the prospect of moving back home and re-joining my crazy nutty family full-time. I suppose this has really been the first time in my life where I had to choose between two very good prospective career tracks, instead of my usual "going with the flow" tactic.

I still don't know what I am doing. At all. No one ever warned me that trying to be a grown-up was going to be like this.

That being said, party party party in Japan 'til I leave! :D
