Luckily it will give us time to clean our rental which looks like it's been the target of a sustained and unhygienic robbery. We've been going up there every day and just walking round the empty house, taking boxes and small things. It's taken up all our time - with a couple of pleasant distractions (the FA Cup, dinner with the lovely Charlie O and his Dad as they passed through Austin) and I'll be glad when we're in. We're having a weekend of decorating with some pals coming over to help, so we took a load of paint up yesterday and got talking to our neighbours. Our direct neighbour was watering her lawn while holding a pint glass of red wine, which cheered me up no end. We also realise that the garden that backs up to our house and that of our neighbours belongs to a couple that have peacocks, goats, cats, dogs, birds, small mammals and "big heaps of junk" so I think we're all going to get along fine.

Properly "chuffed" for you here.

Thanks all!
I have to say it does make you wonder about yourself when you go into your house, close the door and punch the air shrieking ‘hurray, our neighbour is a drinker!’

Maybe one of your other neighbors is a meth dealer.

Makes for a helluva block party.

I just got my first smartphone. I need guidance but everyone I know has an iPhone. (This of course is written on my desktop.)

My brother just called. They've put my cousin in an induced coma. Early morning, he went into cardiac arrest and the EMTs came. They were able to revive him, but he'd been bleeding in his stomach and it was clotting so they thought the coma was best. His sister is ready to fly out from New Jersey at any time. The doctors asked who had power of attorney.

Last weekend, we had brunch at his house - me, my brother, his brother (my other cousin) so it seems that wasn't a minute too soon.

I texted him after the brunch during the week, thanking him, and telling him as my oldest cousin, how I looked up to him and to take care of himself.

The doctors say his internal bleeding has slowed or stopped significantly, but his stomach could rupture any time. If it does, he bleeds out.

They also said he can't go home - ever. He needs to be under medical supervision.

It's very sad.

Thanks everyone. As I've mentioned, we have a small family so we're pretty close. It's my oldest cousin and I looked up to the guy when I was younger. His love of American football is what got me excited about the sport.

My cousin was a pretty stoic guy and I think that drugs and alcohol helped him get out of his shell to start with. But like everything, stuff catches up with you. I knew he was a heavy drinker when I'd see him at family functions, but I had no idea until my dad's companion would tell me he'd come over to her house and polish off a fifth of vodka in less than an hour. Apparently, this had been going on for years (I'm kinda pissed off she didn't tell anyone, but it's kinda late now to place blame). I didn't even know he'd been in and out of the hospital with seizures in the last couple years and I live right across the bay from him. All we can do now is say our goodbyes.

I haven't touched a drop of booze in three months, partly out of what it did to him.
