I've made a friend in Tunbridge Wells. This sounds a bit silly, but in the 8 years I've been here, what I would determine as a "friend" has been hard to come by. It's a combination of time and outlook more than anything else, but as I've got older, making a good connection gets more difficult. Anyway, we share enthusiasms, particularly for Classics and staying up all night chatting.

Good for you.

One suggestion: don't bring up this place if you value his friendship.

A young UC Berkeley guy came by my cubicle today and told me he's taken a new job. He was a business analyst, but his boss's office got moved and so he had to move closer to him.

He actually gave me a card and wrote a nice note.

Thank you for always being someone I could talk to about anything and everything, whether it was sports or investor presentations or high school life. It was never dull sitting next to you with your dry humor that I really appreciate and made the day go by. Thank you and best of luck to you and Derek in all your endeavors.

I wrote a PS as a gag and showed my boss the note because he got one too. The PS said. . .

PS And you know way more about sports than Lionel. Way more!

Coming back to work at lunch, I saw something very sad. A homeless woman with a rolling suitcase, holding a baby doll like a real baby as she crossed the intersection.

A couple we're friends with has lost their 15-year-old daughter, an only child, to bacterial meningitis.
It happened within a day.
We're all in shock.

I’m sorry neige. That is truly awful. Bacterial meningitis really is a swift and dreadful thing. X

I can't imagine. That's a parent's worst nightmare.

Where we live, they've started airing TV commercials on kids getting meningitis and for parents to notice the warning signs. I didn't know it was so prevalent.

That's terrible.

We had a kid health scare this past week. Isabella came back from Colombia on Tuesday with a fever, getting up to 105 sometimes. Bellyache, lethargy, no other real symptoms but man, that fever freaked us the Hell out.

Come Friday the fever had broken and she had a light rash that came and went. In the end we (and the doctor) figure it was roseola, which she's supposed to be a little old for, but shit, I'll take it. In my less paranoid moments I was thinking chikungunya or even dengue.

Anyway, she's ok now, unless chronic brattiness is a symptom of anything other than being three-and-a-half.

Niege's story makes me all the more thankful.
