Aw, God I'm sorry to hear that love. Cerebral or abdominal? I know it's scant comfort but I know that unit inside out and they are wonderful.

I'm hoping you're right, any confidence I can have would help. Abdominal, btw, he was in a huge amount of pain, last time I saw him. Apparently the bleeding must be slow, because he's still alive, which is the good news so far.

He's out of surgery. Lots of complications, seven hours of work, hopefully he can recover.

He won't be out of the woods for a while, if he makes it past 7 days, we can start to relax a little. Having blood thinners due to a previous heart attack caused lots of problems, they've had to improvise lots to keep his kidneys connected. Despite being a 75 year old with a pacemaker and a heart attack, he's always been fit and active, so there's some hope.

My son's friend asked me the other night if I'd allow Derek to play football. The friend and his brother, who's about 6'3", 240 lbs., think Derek would be good. I played Pop Warner, youth football, for a few years and played one year of high school until I quit for water polo. I was pretty good - captain of my youth league team and played center, tight end, defensive end and linebacker. I had a mean streak and would not be denied, which are attributes you have to have playing football. You have to think, even if you're not, that you're tougher, faster, stronger than the other guys on the other side of the ball.

I told my son's friend, "I don't really want Derek to play football."

My son's friend said, "But you played and said you got made captain."

I told the both of them that there are lots of other sports that don't lead to potential brain damage and I'd rather have him go out for wrestling - another sport Derek was considering.

Most of the friends I have in life have a foundation in mutual love of sports and I think team and individual sports, albeit different, provide and build lots of positive things in people's lives. When I took up guitar, I took it up with the same attitude I took when shooting layup after layup in the driveway or fielding ground ball after ground ball against the garage door. You have to put in the time to get good, or at least proficient, and you can't let failure detract you. Success will come if you work. I use a lot of these principles I learned from sports in my everyday life. Team sports are a little different than individual sports in its camaraderie and "have your teammates back" attributes - you have to sacrifice yourself sometimes, for the good of the team.

Derek is not a sports follower so doesn't know too much about the sport, but I gave my permission if he really wants to do it. I told him that both sports, football and wrestling, are sports you can't do half-assed. Either you're all in and if you're not, you'll get hurt.

There's a woman on my hockey team who I drive to and from our games, and lately she's been giving me a few beers to reciprocate. Two of the tins she gave me last night are a style of beer called 'gose', which I've never heard of before, and the 'flavour profile' is 'pink Himalayan salt and coriander'. I haven't felt like trying them yet...

That kind of crap is big down here. I'd drink one if someone gave me one, but . . .

Call me old fashioned, but the word coriander should not be included in the ingredients list on a beer can.
