East/North East London is quite a big place and lots of famous people are from here.

Fo' shame, forgetting Stan Laurel - or is it only people who are alive we are counting?

No, you're right.

I still think of the south of the county (Kendal, Barrow etc.) as a different area altogether. Which it was, until 1974.

Whitley Bay, or more generally North Tyneside.

The crime novelist Anne Cleeves is from Whitley Bay.

Mark Knopfler and Andrea Riseborough grew up there. Knopfler famously makes reference to the town in Tunnel of Love, as well as neighbouring Cullercoats.

Neil Tennant and Robert Westall were from North Shields, and Sting's from Wallsend.

Robson Green and Ross Noble are from not far away, in Cramlington. I believe Green still lives in Cullercoats.

Weirdly, Evan Dando lived in Whitley Bay for a while, after he married a local woman, Elizabeth Moses. He was a regular player for a while at The Cluny, a small venue in Byker.

The Geordie stand up comedian Bobby Thompson (hugely popular in the north east and Scotland, probably unknown anywhere else) lived in Monkseaton, only a few streets from where I grew up. I think the actor Tim Healy did too, I'm sure my dad's mentioned seeing him in the pub a few times.

Good god man. Get hold of some of the Flashman novels, some of the funniest books ever written. They're wonderful.

Yes, don't be greedy - you've still got the whole 'Bromley Contingent' to call upon! (arguably)
