What's your attitude towards food, very generally speaking? Great pleasure? Necessity? Depends on the day/place/meal?
Food is one of the great pleasures in life. With that said, I'm perfectly happy eating very basic things every day. I could eat the same thing for a certain meal most days of the week, and wouldn't get too agitated about it. Also, though I say I love it and it's very important to me, I've never really felt I had the time or disposable income to eat out at a lot of different places. Our town is chock full of interesting restaurants, but I don't ever really think about going to any of them. And I'm a good enough recipe cook, but I've never really tried to do really ambitious cooking projects.
What did you use to eat that you don't any more? and vice versa?
The main thing I used to eat that I don't is sort of Texas/Southern comfort food: Tex Mex, BBQ, chicken fried steak, fried chicken. I don't not eat it, but really it only happens when British people are in town who want to try the indigenous food. Of those things, I eat more chili than anything else, but only because the Texas Chili Parlor is about half a block from where I work. Though I was always happy to eat Indian food, I would say I now eat far more of that than I ever did in the past.
If you could only eat food from one nation for the rest of your life....?
I don't know what this means. Food produced by one nation or one nation's cuisine? I'm pretty happy with America because we have great food and a wide variety of it. I'd probably be happiest for decades eating in Italy, though I've never actually been there.
What did you last eat?
I just ate a salad at my desk prepared by my wife. I suspect it was rather similar to the salad she described eating yesterday.
What do you eat most often?
As far as types of food, I suppose it would be curry of one sort or another. Or, I might say beans of different varieties.
20 BCBers land on your doorstep RIGHT NOW - what do you make for them?
Tarka daal, I suppose, though we might need a few more pounds of lentils. With notice, I might make chili. I haven't made it in awhile, and I've never made this recipe, but it seems pretty strong. http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/2009/11/ ... red-chili/
What food item(s) make you go BLEURRRGH?
None I can think of. I might hesitate at a large eyeball or brain or something.
What's the best meal you've ever had? and the worst?
It's funny, nothing really sticks out in my mind. I had some pretty good pizza in Brooklyn and some pretty sketchy pizza in an Austrian train station. I'm not too fussy.
