John Jorgenson anyone?

Postby Seymore Porn » 23 May 2014, 00:39

I went to see his Electric Band last night, what a fucking treat. One of the best I've ever heard, I'm familiar with him through The Hellecasters, but was not prepared for the whole J.J. package. Light5ning which excursions around the neck, heartbreaking tone and melodies, telling a story with chords, surprisingly powerful vocals, a shit hot band - Italian keys and drummer, consummate professionals with nice harmonies from the keys player, and J.J.'s secret weapon (not to these lugs mind, I've jammed with the man) Alan Thompson on bass. The man is a MONSTER on bass, but only when monstering is called for, the rest of the time, is back seat time. I've also jammed with Alan when he was on guitar, my ears are still red at the thought of it.
A magnificent night of musical virtuosity and melody AND free stovies, not to mention a really talented young solo performer on acoustic guitar and vocals, who had been support on only one date, but realised that Alan had played bass with John Martyn, so did a Martyn tune with an unrehearsed Alan on fretless. What a fucking privilege just being there.
What a wonderful night, for thirty quid too.

Watching the London leaders and their proxies unite against a simple democratic measure tells me all I need to know about the UK in any form. Their interests are not Scotland's interests.

Agree about Alan. Saw him a couple of times with John Martyn - a great bass player.

I know him through his association with Chris Hillman. I've seen him perform before but can't think of what context it was although I'm pretty sure it was at The Palms. Great player indeed. He in himself is a secret weapon of sorts though musicians know him. He was hot from the day he started. He kind of hit the road running.

What was the venue like?

Is there a reason I'm missing why this has been moved here?

I've known John since he and Jeff Ross* moved to L.A. from the Inland Empire in a rockabilly group called the Shakin' Snakes. I'll be seeing him in October, playing with a gypsy jazz group. He played clarinet in one of the bands roving around Disneyland. The man is dazzlingly talented, and a nice guy (anybody mention that he toured for several years as part of Elton John's band?).

* Jeff replaced him when he left the Desert Rose Band; they're still friends.

I'm not sure why this thread suddenly came up, but here's John and a few other guys last month. John's on the right; Jeff Ross on the left; and Albert Lee's in there, too.

I've subsequently see John again, the following year. This time he still had Alan Thompson on bass and had the wonderful Webb Sisters with him. No opening act, the first set included mostly Webb Sisters stuff with John and Alan playing and harmonising. One of the sister announced that, they had only met Alan the day before, where he had picked them up from Glasgow Airport, and they all had an early dinner at his house, before the first gig of the tour. No rehearsal - Alan did it on the fly, playing fucking fretless, and according to the sister, never put a foot wrong. He certainly didn't the following night when I was there. For me, the highlight of the night was Whiskey Lullaby, which I know John does with his Bluegrass Band, and despite no Herb Pederson, the harmonies were spine tingling.
On both occasions I got to chat briefly with JJ, what a nice, charming and unassuming man.
Unrelated, but I watched a documentary about Trio, which featured Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. I'd never heard their stuff, and really loved what they had done, and didn't know that they had done another record years later.
In the closing credits I saw, "Harmonies arranged by Herb Pederson."

John and Herb Pedersen are on Chris Hillman's new album; I saw them in concert while back. John and Chris both live here, in Ventura.
Herb came to the Trio project via Emmy; he's been working with her since, I'm pretty sure, the first (post-Gliding Bird) album; he and John Starling as vocal arrangers/backup singers.
