Or do you choose to see it that way?

I'm not having any luck in locating a copy. I'll have to go on memory.

..I picked up a copy pretty cheap in Borders a few months or so ago, that's why I assumed it was fairly widely available.
It's a real pain the way DVD's just disappear from the shelves, I get into real difficulty when planning for the year. I kept promising my students we were going to look at Chungking Express as one of the films in the New Wave module we're doing but I just haven't been able to find a copy. I'm quickly watching 400 Blows tonight and doing some last minute notes for them instead..which isn't ideal as the exam is in a week and a half time!

I still haven't located it (we don't even have a Borders in Macon Georgia). But can I start it off by saying that Gena Rowlands gives one of the all-time greatest performances ever in this film?

Yes, you may. And you'd be right. Rarely have I seen an actor get under the skin of a character as comprehensively as she does here. It's an immensely draining perfromance to watch - at times it's very difficult to look at the screen - but this is an astonishing piece of work by Rowlands.

I've just hold of the disc, and I'll watch the film on Sunday. More thoughts then...

When Davey said that, I tried to think of a musical equivalent, a musical performance that is as massive and heroic. I decided the comparison showed up the comparative lack thereof in music, at least in the music I listen to. There is nothing even approaching that calibre. Or maybe it's just the nature of music -- it's not really meant to be draining and complete in that sort of way. She deserved two Oscars for this!

I agree. she just comes down off the screen and sits next to you, doesn't she?

I was sure I had this one on a VHS in a box on a shelf but I haven't been able to find it. I love the 'Film Club' and all the work that moddie puts into keeping it afloat so I'll chime in anyway.

I once took somebody to see this in the theatre. I asked them how they liked it afterwards. "I feel like you took me to your house to meet your family" EXACTLY!!!
