Good man, Jack.

I'm so glad he's in good spirits.

He is SO stubborn. xo He is the skinniest animal I've ever seen - he looks like that photo of David Bowie backstage with John & Yoko - but I'm grateful he's still here.

I miss him coming upstairs to cuddle with us at night. :( But that's a long journey for a little kitty. I'm surprised he kept going up and down the stairs as long as he did.

The last few days have not been good. He struggles to get around, has a kind of distant look in his eyes like he's not all there anymore, is as skinny as he's ever been, and he's finally starting to show a noted disinterest in food.

He's surprised us before, and I've never known as tough an animal, so maybe this is just a couple of bad days and he'll be back to his normal sick self, but I'm having an uncomfortable feeling that we're getting near the end for real this time.

A couple of weeks ago he started coming upstairs and climbing up on the bed and sleeping with us after a couple months of mostly staying downstairs, so we got hopeful. But maybe it was just his way of saying goodbye.

Thanks again to everyone, and I hope I'm wrong. I think maybe I'm typing this in part so I can convince myself it's for real so I'll be ready for it. I'll definitely let everyone know one way or another.

I'm so sorry man! You know I've been there too not so long ago.

My new boy will never replace Ginger but he fills the emptiness in a good way.

In case you missed this earlier, here's Woody:

We are a good example of being ruled by cats.

But they deserve it.

Good old Jack. He'll be all right, one way or another.

Best wishes!

Appreciate all the good thoughts. We have a vet appointment tomorrow, where we'll have him checked out, and get him hydrated. He might rally a bit once hydrated- it's happened before, but he's never been quite this far gone before.

One thing we do know for sure is, if the vet recommends putting him down, we are definitely not going to do it there and then. If it has to be done, it'll be done in the comfort of his home around the people that love him, not after being crammed into a carrier and forced to go to his least favorite place. So unless he goes on his own (which according to everything I've ever heard, cats hardly ever do), he'll still be around for a few days at least. We'll let everyone know.

Appreciate you referring to him as "heroic," Martha. That's exactly how I think of him. He's faced it with quiet strength and dignity, which is pretty much how he does everything.

No, we don't give him the fluids at home, though it has been discussed as an option. He's usually had more pressing problems, so we just get that done too if he needs it whenever we go in. I'm going to try to do it myself while we're at the vet, so if he's not at death's door (which, as I say, we're completely prepared to be told that he is), we can get the necessary stuff to keep doing it at home as needed.

That's a very touching story about Sydney. I would love it (well, maybe "love" is not quite the right word...but it would be a bit easier) if Jack went that way. He's not demonstratively affectionate in that way- doesn't really like to be held- but I think his favorite way to go would be lying on his blanket with us by his side, gently scratching him under the chin.

Jack just went peacefully on his own, sparing us having to make the horrible decision of how and when to put him to sleep.

I can't imagine a better feline friend. It was an honor to have known him.

Sorry to hear that Dave. I guess it's some small mercy in a way that you were spared the stress and heartache of having to take that decision, but I guess that's little consolation right now.

Thanks all. I think he lasted as long as he did due to the power of love. I'm amazed and grateful for the amount of love that came from people who never even met him.

Dave, Carolyn, you did everything you could, and he knew that, and zipped out on his own terms which means he kept his kitty head held high.
All as it should be.
Thinking of you.
