i was dreading seeing this....i was really hoping he would recover....

the man sent me 400 Tom Waits songs just cuz i expressed an interest... i thought that was the sweetest gesture, and it just choked me up to read his daughter saying that that's the kind of man he was and it made him happy to share music.... i'm even more touched now... and it seems his daughter is as beautiful a person as he was...

Rest peacefully, Gater...

Very upsetting news. I didn't know him very well but we'd helped each other out with a tune or three over the years and, after all that's what this place is all about.
I found a PM Gater wrote to me in 2003, thanking me for some Doors live bootlegs, and of course his signature still reads " I won't retire but I might retread".

Rest easy, mate. My thoughts are with Holly and those who loved you

Terrible news. Again
I admire Holly's strength and courage to send that message and I hope she and her family will find further strength to carry on.

Thanks so much for digging this out. I had a look for it, but to no avail. I think that this is what Monet would have looked like at Giverny.

I, too, have only just seen this having been away. Seemed like a true gent and is a big loss. Best wishes to his family.

Yes, it's a nice image. I have two of him, on the sleeve of his Teenage Kicks CD. There was a young Gater, and a current Gater - but this color photograph is beautiful.

Here's the tracklsting of his Teenage Kicks CD - rather eclectic.

The year is 1971.

1. The Kinks - Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues
2. Rod Stewart - Mandolin Wind
3. The Doors - The WASP
4. Humble Pie - Shine On
5. The Who - My Wife
6. Alice Cooper - The Ballad Of Dwight Fry
7. Janis Joplin - Me & Bobby McGhee
8. The Rolling Stones - Bitch
9. Nilsson - Coconut
10. Three Dog Night - Liar
11. Paul Simon - Me & Julio By The Schoolyard
12. Traffic - The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys

It is an especially lovely picture for remembrance. Especially since his daughter shared the story of him giving flowers from his wife's garden to attendees of her funeral, it adds an extra level of both joy and heartache, because this is who this man was, right there.
We're lucky to have known him for the brief time we did. I hope that wherever the next stop is that he and his wife are together, because they were a terrific couple.

What I like about that picture is that it a quintessential photo of a blackcatboner. The Tee shirt, the shorts, the hair, and the flowers. He was one of us, and we seem to diminishing.

I haven't been around in a while so it's sad to come back to find this. Even sadder reading Holly's message, though it has been nice to see the camaraderie expressed by the BCBers who knew Rob. I would very much like to know the tracklisting of his CD so that perhaps I could compile and play it in his memory. If anyone could post this at some point I'm sure I would not be alone in my gratitude.

It's funny, Gater in his garden looks uncannily like Richard Brautigan and, judging by what I have read, I'm sure he would have enjoyed Brautigan's 'Revenge of the Lawn' which I shall now sample a couple of appropriate vignettes from in his honour.

RIP Gater, gone but not to be forgotten.

Just so y'all know this.

I did send a e-mail to Holly conveying our sympathies and accepted her offer to send me a copy of said cd.
I haven't heard back from her as yet nor have I received a cd.

Terrible news. I'm afraid that over the last few years I kind of lost contact with him although a few years ago we were in regular contact. I remember one year he sent me a pile of JU CD's to give out on his behalf and in return sent him back copies of everyone elses. I recall he was extremely pleased to have the chance to listen to the eclectic stuff he received.

I am sure she has a lot to deal with right now and may be in touch if and when she is ready.
