I can't claim to have known him, but he was a decent man, and a cool guy, and most importantly, he was one of us, in every way.
A very sad loss.

I met him and his wife once or twice, up for a JU in New York.

Very sweet people.

This is hard to accept.

Heartfelt condolences to the family.

Yves, I hope you'll convey our extended sympathies if you continue to be in touch with Holly. And thanks - this can't be easy for you.

I think I have somewhere too, Jeemo.

This is just desperately sad news. His daughter taking the time, and possessing the courage, to write that email has really broken me up.

RIP Gater - you were a fine, fine man ( I never met you, but we conversed on here). And my sincerest condolences to Holly and the family - it has truly been a devastating year for you, and I can only wish you as peaceful and loving end of 2008 as is possible, and an improved 2009. You absolutely deserve at least that.

Oh, what a disappointment.

He was someone who would send me things purely out of generosity (if I were going to a relevant concert or something like that).

I'm terribly sorry for his family and friends, and only hope that he managed to pass on with a minimum of pain.

This is terribly sad news to arrive home to.

My condolences to Holly and Robert's family.

This weekend I'll dig out some of the music Gater sent me and give it a spin in his memory.

Rest in Peace Robert.

Yhis is sad news. I exchanged a few PMs and discs with Gater a few years back. He seemed like a great guy. He'll be missed.

RIP Gater,

Hugh.

I remember him from past baseball threads and his love for the Phillies. I hope he was able to enjoy at least some of the World Series. In a way, I will look at their win last night as a small tribute to him.

A soon as I get it I can copy for those who would like it.

Could you bring copies to the Christmas JU in London, Yves?

I'm devastated by the news, and crying as I write this.

Like myself, Gater wasn't a man of many words.

But he was one of the guys who made this place what it is.

A generous, passionate enthusiast.

RIP, Robert, and condolences to the family. I can just guess how hard this must be for you!

It's all been said. I had only brief exchanges with him. He sent me a couple of comp CDs in exchange for something I sent him. I can't remember what they were. No matter, we helped wach other out with no prospect of ever being face to face. Sleep well.

Thanks to Yves for pursuing this.

Bryan.

PS Can anyone find that lovely picture of him in his garden in white shirt?
