Re: Breaking Bad
I think he's still engaged in that battle. Once Hank was killed that seemed to bring out full Heisenberg, the one that wants Jesse not just dead/ out of the way but tortured. But we did see Walt turn baby Holly in.
As cruel as the call to Skyler was (one critic noted, he yelled every criticism that Skyler-hating fans have bagged on her for), he's communicating that he alone is responsible, knowing the cops must be listening in. I think the end game, there, is that the police will go easy on her and she can still raise his children. He's crying when he makes the call, tearing apart his own family to save them from him.

He was trying to get Sky off the hook, with that phone call. Hopefully it worked.

Absolutely, his insults were calculated for effect. Cranston's acting in that whole scene is a masterpiece of control- right down to the moment he breaks down at the event. I love the performance of the guy who plays Walter Jr- he's arguably the only lead character who is truly sympathetic (Hank may have become the "hero", but he was still a pig-headed braggart with anger problems). The look on his face as he calls the police on Walt was pretty heartbreaking. On another note, Rian Johnson's direction was filled with inspired little moments throughout- not least the bleak comedy of Walt rolling the last barrell of $10million to a secluded location.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

He got a safe to put the barrel in
And a house to put the safe in
And a watchdog on a chain to make quite sure
And his face was very funny
When he counted all his money
And he realized he hadn't any more.
Though if he went thru all that and spent $11 million, he'll probably be able to sell the house and buy another barrel.

Walt will spend eternity in hell, rolling around a damned barrel full of money in a desert.

Fair enough, good advice, though I actually watched the first two of season 4 on Netflix last night.

Yeah, it's all set-up for a major showdown, isn't it? However, I think my favourite moment was Saul desperately trying to reason with Walt- Odenkirk has taken a character that could've been merely comic relief and done something really fascinating with him- he's arguably the most 'reasonable' figure left on the show, partly because he knows exactly who he is. Walt's decline into a pathetic husk has been even quicker than I expected tho- it seems significant that many of the scenes took place in dark shrouds.
It's strange in that very little actually happened in this episode, and yet so much has been explained. Jesse Plemons' is absolutely chilling as Todd- even at his most guilelessly ingratiating, there's something utterly frightening about how blank he is.

If I ever hear that voice say the word "ma'am?" I am going to run screaming.
This is LA, it could happen. My wife once ran into the actor that played Bob in Twin Peaks and had a panic attack.

Re: Breaking Bad
I had a hard time watching the phone call to Jr. It's like the final nail in the coffin. He feels like he has almost succeeded in helping them financially, so close! And then when he figures out a way to do it, Jr. just curses him out. HE has caused his family's financial ruin.
Not very reassuring seeing Elliot & Gretchen show up again either. I wonder if the ricin might be for them.

Re: Breaking Bad
As if the situation could not get any more "meta", the New York Times joins in on the fun with this fictional column:
Considering the show has been even more of a "specialist interest" than the Sopranos, it's amazing how much buzz it's generated in terms of media commentary. Although you could never properly calculate it, I would be fascinated to find out how many people (like myself) have been forced to watch it through (ahem) certain channels due to lack of access to Pay TV. I would say it's a good multiplier more than the "official" figures.
It screened free-to-air in NZ for the first four seasons, but always a good six or so months after the original broadcast in the US, it's now screening on the PPV "Soho" channel on the same day as the US broadcast. I would pay for it, but I simply don't have the budget to do so. Besides, I always purchase the DVD boxsets.
On “Breaking Bad” on Sunday night, Charlie Rose referred to a column by Andrew Ross Sorkin in The New York Times. Here is an excerpt from that fictional column:
It may be charitable to describe Elliott and Gretchen Schwartz as philanthropists.
Last week, the founders of Gray Matter Technologies gave a $28 million grant to create a drug abuse treatment center throughout the Southwest. The family, which is said to be worth more than $1 billion — Gray Matter’s market value is $2.16 billion — was heralded by advocates of drug control and treatment throughout the country. In Washington, the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy said in a statement that the Schwartzes are among “the next generation of great American philanthropists tackling one of the biggest epidemics confronting our country: illicit drugs.”
Maybe it is cynical to suggest, but the timing and backstory of the grant is raising red flags among some investors on Wall Street and prompting some to ask: Is the donation a publicity stunt meant to mask troubling news about the company?
Little known except to a small cadre of industry insiders, the Schwartzes have been scrambling in recent weeks to keep a long-running secret from being revealed. Gray Matter’s stock has sunk over the last week as speculation has mounted that the company could be tied to a drug kingpin in Albuquerque who has made national headlines: Walter White, the former chemistry teacher turned international methamphetamine dealer known as “Heisenberg.”
According to people close to the company, Mr. White was a co-founder of Gray Matter and was a former college sweetheart of Mrs. Schwartz. The company’s name – Gray Matter – was a mix of the Schwartz name, which is German for “black” and Mr. White’s name, hence “gray.”
It remains unclear whether the Securities and Exchange Commission will investigate, but given the prominent nature of Mr. White and Gray Matter, which until now was considered a high-flier on Wall Street, it would be surprising if an inquiry were not opened. Mr. Schwartz, who won a Nobel prize for his scientific research, has parlayed that success into the celebrity spotlight, hobnobbing with A-listers. He was recently given as a gift a Stratocaster guitar autographed by Eric Clapton.
While Mr. White is said to have had a falling out with the Schwartzes, people briefed on the matter said, the two families had been in contact recently. A person close to both families said Mr. White and his wife were seen at the Schwartzes’ estate for Mr. Schwartz’s birthday party. Mrs. Schwartz was also seen at the White’s home. The Schwartzes are said to have offered to rehire Mr. White, who declined the opportunity, these people said. Mr. White had sold his shares years before the company went public to the Schwartzes for $5,000.
A spokesman for Gray Matter said, “We don’t comment on rumors and speculation.”
Mr. White could not be reached for comment.

OK, Jesse helps Walter kill himself so Walter doesn't have to die on cancer's terms.
