My parents were big fans of cheesy horror and I would watch it with them late at night. To give them credit, they allowed me to sleep with them when I was scared.

I was excited for a Jim Jarmusch film set in Spain, and I loved the cast of characters and the cinematography, but damn, it was slow.




Also called Chef's Special. This was a nice little romantic comedy set in Madrid. I enjoyed it.

^^^ Never heard of Jarmusch movie; thought I'd seen them all. It doesn't seem to have garnered very enthusiastic reviews, though, so I suppose I won't rush into it.

We saw ‘Dolemite is My Name’ the other night. It did feel very Netflixy, but was great fun.

I liked it too. L.A. locals got to see a lot of real run down parts of town semi-gussied up.
I can't remember the last time I enjoyed Eddie Murphy as much.
I'm glad they showed some actual "Dolemite" footage at the end since Rudy Ray Moore is such a piss-poor actor compared to Eddie Murphy.

I liked the point the writers decided the story should make. brisk and well done but there's no way I would have paid money to see it in the Theodore.

I hated it because I thought it was badly written and ponderous. Nothing to do with the subject matter.

I may have had low expectations, but I enjoyed this almost as much as the first one.

We saw the first one at a theatre and I really liked it. I watched the second one on youtube and it didn't have the same pull for me.

Joker (2019)



'Joker' is a relentlessly dark psychological drama with almost nothing that could be considered action movie elements, nor even dark comedy, setting aside one scene. Joaquin Phoenix's bracing portrayal of the title character calls to mind other characters such as Travis Bickle, Billy Bob Thornton's character in 'Sling Blade' and the protagonist in 'Night Crawler,' if only for the lean, hungry predator aspect, not to mention the evil success story trajectory. It is a movie that does make you wonder whether to feel sympathy for the protagonist as a victim of uncaring society. Ultimately the idea that one can become powerful by a violent release of your darkest impulses should give you pause. For comic book nerds like me, there is important Batman mythological material in the final act, and the movie explains well the protagonist's obsession with Bruce Wayne, and vice versa.

Parasite (2019)



This story of a wifi stealing family of con men/women that insinuate themselves into the lives of a wealthy family is often laugh-loud funny, and at other times, not so much. It is thoroughly unpredictable, and a crazy ride from start to finish.

Can't wait to see Parasite. Meanwhile,



Midsommar is not "an era-defining masterpiece,"* in my opinion, but it was pretty effective, and fun to watch.

I liked the quirky characters and all in all, I enjoyed this little flick. It was a bit slow at points but worth the hour and twenty eight minutes spent.

It was Harry Dean Stanton's last flick and a fitting way to go.

I watch next to no television but last night did my yearly Netflix trawl and did pretty well out of it.
I watched "The Squid and the Whale", the Wes Anderson directed thing about a couple divorcing in Brooklyn in the 1990s, and then two stand up comedies by people I had never heard of. One was Jenny Slate's "Stage Fright" which was cut with poignant and funny trips back to her childhood home, and then Zach Galifianakis Live at the Purple Onion which was fucking hilarious. I know absolutely nothing about either of these people, which is what happens I suppose if you never surf Netflix!
